Hildenbrand and Ravat (1997) inferred the locations of near-surface dikes fromanalyses of high-resolution aeromagnetic data. The lines represent locationsof magnetic highs that they interpreted as dikes. Modeling indicates thedikes are vertical, extend to within 200 m of the surface, and have themagnetic properties of mafic or ultramafic rock. Some of the interpreteddikes coincide with the easternmost Early Permian, mica peridotite andperhaps lamprophyre dikes that Nelson mapped (these are in cover lampdike.)Hildenbrand and Ravat concluded that the interpreted dikes arealso probably Early Permian ultramafic intrusions.

This data is from the geologic map of the Paducah 1�x2� Sheet,digitized by the Illinois State Geological Survey, John Nelson directing.We obtained the digitized, exported coverage of faults and geologyfrom Barb Stiff (stiff@geoserv.isgs.uiuc.edu) 1995.09.05Our intent is to show the overall fault pattern, and to show the locationsof the main exposed and near-surface faults for comparison to deep subsurfacestructures. We made little attempt to edit details of the digitized faults,beyond adding tick marks to indicate dip directions of a few normal faults.For details such as exact locations, fault dips, separations, and cross-cutting relations, users should consult the original geologic maps.

Although many faults are detected at the surface and in deep structures, theyare important in evaluating present seismic hazard only if they show evidenceof having recent slip. Older faults may have healed, or movement may haveoccurred under a different stress orientation than currently exists, orseismic activity may wax and wane at intervals longer than the historicrecord. Isoseismals of historic Central U.S. earthquakes are containedin 26 separate coverages.Margaret Hopper provided these isoseismals after reexamining theintensity data and re-calculating the isoseismal contours. Shegenerated isoseismal contours for each earthquake using computercontouring software, but adjusted positions of contours where, inher expert opinion, computer software had erroneously located them.Some isoseismals were unchanged from original authors and arereferenced in her unpublished manuscript.
