The U.S. Geological Survey recovered 9 piston cores from theNorthwind Ridge in the Canada Basin of the Arctic Ocean from acruise of the USCGC Polar Star during 1988. Preliminaryanalysis of the cores suggests sediments deposited onNorthwind Ridge preserve a detailed record of glacial andinterglacial cycles for the last few hundred-thousand to onemillion years. This report includes quantitative data onforaminifers and selected sediment size-fraction data insamples from Northwind Ridge core PI-88AR P5.

This is a collaborativeproject involving specialists from the USGS, Kansas State University,and the University of California-Davis in paleontology (Thompson,Buchner, Forester, Bradbury), stratigraphy and sedimentology (Oviatt,Kelsey, Bracht), and paleomagnetism and environmental magnetism(Roberts).
