The map area is located in northern Idaho and extends across the state border into western Montana.

This polygon also represents undivided Tertiary andCretaceous: Osiris Tuff and Wasatch Fm (Tertiary), Pine HollowFm (Tertiary?), Canaan Peak Fm (Tertiary? and Cretaceous), andKaiparowits and Wahweap Formations (Cretaceous). It is bounded on the north byCarquinez Strait, through which flows 27 percent of California'ssurface water runoff. San Francisco Bay forms the westernboundary, the San Joaquin Valley borders it on the east and theLivermore Valley forms the southern boundary. The digital ARC/INFO databases included in this directory provide a geologic map GIS database of the Absaroka-Beartooth study area (ABSA), a tract of approximately 1.4 million acres of National Forest land in southwestern Montana. The ABSA is adjacent to the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, and includes southeastern parts of Gallatin National Forest and western parts of the Custer National Forest. The geologic map was originally prepared to accompany a U.S. Geological Survey evaluation of the mineral resource potential within the ABSA. The ssfb_m1 digital map database, which is compiled from 1970'svintage sources, represents the general distribution and identityof geologic materials in the southern San Francisco Bay region,California, west of the Calaveras fault. It is not a geologic map,because it does not address the geologic structure or thestratigraphic organization of the map units in a systematic way.Instead, it is directed at the distribution and character of thegeologic materials following the pattern of its progenitors,Wentworth and others (1985) and Ellen and Wentworth (in press).Consultation of these reports and the other compilation sources willaid in using the database.

Crystalline basement in central California extends westward from theexposed Sierra Nevada beneath the sedimentary fill of the GreatValley and under the eastern edge of the Coast Ranges at mid-crustaldepth.
