The paper version of the Geologic Map of the eastern part of the Challis National Forest and vicinity, Idaho was compiled by Anna Wilson and Betty Skipp in 1994. The geology was compiled on a 1:250,000 scale topographic base map. TechniGraphic System, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado digitized this map under contract for N.Shock. G.Green edited and prepared the digital version for publication as a GIS database. The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps.

The geology of the Wallace 1:100,000 quadrangle, Idaho was compiled byReed S. Lewis in 1997 and supplemented by field mapping by Reed S. Lewis,Russell F. Burmester, and Mark D. McFaddan in 1997 and 1998. The geologicmap information was inked onto a 1:100,000-scale topographic base map forinput into an Arc/Info geographic information system(GIS). The digital ARC/INFO databases included in this directory provide a geologic map GIS database of the Absaroka-Beartooth study area (ABSA), a tract of approximately 1.4 million acres of National Forest land in southwestern Montana. The ABSA is adjacent to the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, and includes southeastern parts of Gallatin National Forest and western parts of the Custer National Forest. The geologic map was originally prepared to accompany a U.S. Geological Survey evaluation of the mineral resource potential within the ABSA. USGS-Open-File Report 99-317 is a collection of digitaldatabases that are the result of the compilation andre-interpretation of published and unpublished 1:250,000-and 1:63,360-scale mapping. The map area coversapproximately 62,000 sq km (23,000 sq mi) in land area andencompasses much of 13 1:250,000-scale quadrangles on theAlaska Peninsula in southwestern Alaska. This reportshows the bedrock geology of the following 1:250,000 scalequadrangles: Naknek, Mt. Katmai, Ugashik, Chignik, SutwikIsland, Cold Bay, Port Moller, Stepovak Bay, False Pass,Simeonof Island, Bristol Bay; and parts of Afognak andKarluk.

This report presents the results of the USGS Mineral Resources Program activity to compile a national-scale geologic map database to support national and regional level projects, including mineral resource and geoenvironmental assessments. The only comprehensive sources of regional- and national-scale geologic maps are state geologic maps with scales ranging from 1:100,000 to 1:1,000,000. Digital versions of these state maps form the core of what is presented here. Because no adequate geologic map exists for the state of Alaska, it is being compiled in regional blocks that also form part of this national database. The digital ARC/INFO databases included in this directory provide a geologic map GIS database of the Custer National Forest in the Pryor Mountains of south-central Montana. The geologic map area comprises approximately 122 square miles (316 square kilometers) of National Forest lands, located 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Billings, Montana. This geologic map was originally prepared to accompany a U.S. Geological Survey evaluation of the mineral resource potential of the Custer National Forest in the Pryor Mountains. The results of this mineral resource assessment were published as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-256. This ARC/INFO database was created from figure 2 (p. 4) of that report.

USGS Open-File Report 99-18B is a digital representationof a paper map that is being released simultaneously, USGSOpen-File Report 99-18A. The map shows the bedrockgeology of the Seldovia quadrangle, Alaska, at a scale of1:250,000, compiled from new mapping (1988-1993) andpublished sources. Digital files include various mapcoverages in Arc/Info export format, and a picture of themap plus all map-collar information in Adobe Illustratorand PDF formats. The map collar includes detailedmap-unit descriptions, text on the physiography,neotectonics, geologic history, and economic geology,cross-section, correlation of map units chart, and mapshowing original sources of information.

Previously, the western part was released as Map A and the northern part as Map B of USGS Geologic Investigations Series Map I-2584. These maps were compiled, digitized, and produced using the USGS software program GSMAP. All the original source maps were simplified on mylar overlays, digitized at their original map scales and projections, and then merged into the final maps. After editing, the digital maps were filtered to remove all points not necessary for improving resolution at a scale of 1:126,720 (2 mi per in., the scale used by the USDA Forest Service)....

This geologic map was prepared as a part of a study of digitalmethods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. Thegeologic map was digitized from the original scribe sheets used toprepare the published Geologic Map of Colorado (Tweto 1979).Consequently the digital version is at 1:500,000 scale using theLambert Conformal Conic map projection parameters of the state basemap. Stable base contact prints of the scribe sheets were scanned ona Tektronix 4991 digital scanner. The scanner automatically convertsthe scanned image to an ASCII vector format.
