Disinfection by-products (DBP) are formed when natural organic matter (NOM) in water reacts with a disinfectant, usually chlorine. DBPs are a health risk element and regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. A study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of NOM that contribute to DBPs in 17 different drinking water systems in Alaska. In order to determine the nature of the organic matter contributing to DBPs, DBP formation potential was compared with standard water quality parameters such as UV-254, color and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), as well as pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results showed strong correlations between UV-254 and DBP formation potential for all waters studied....

The article examines the impacts of climate change on the transportation system of Alaska which has more than 6,600 miles of coastline, and an underlayer of permafrost in approximately 80 percent of its land mass. Its highways are revealed to be frequently icing, cracking and washing away due to the warming permafrost, coastal erosion and increasing storms. Heat is presented to increase subsurface water flow which in turn affects roads resulting in instability in surfaces and slopes.

The recovery of forests following stand-replacing disturbance is of widespread interest; however, there is both a lack of definitional clarity for the term “recovery” and a dearth of empirical data on the rates of forest recovery associated with different disturbance types. We conducted a quantitative review of literature to determine recovery times following wildfire and timber harvest and to evaluate variation in recovery rates across Canada’s diverse forest ecosystems. Recovery was assessed according to the rate of change associated with certain forest structural attributes that have traditionally been used as indicators of forest growth and productivity. The recovery of forest canopy cover, tree height, and...

A content analysis of PCMB meeting minutes from its first meeting to 1993 reveals a repeated pattern of communication in which Native hunters pose questions about the need for caribou research requiring the use of aircraft and collars and the handling of animals, and a response by agency managers to inform community residents about the value of collars in science and/or demonstrating their application. Never discussed openly at PCMB meetings was what the Gwich'in regard as a negotiated order of power-sharing arrangement between Gwich'in and caribou, established in the time before there was time, nunh ttrotsit ultsui gwuno (when the earth was first made), when caribou were people and people were caribou. As told...

Detailed observations of stream, soil, and groundwater chemistry were used to determine the role of fire, permafrost and snowmelt processes on the fluxes of carbon, nitrogen and major solutes from interior Alaskan catchments. We examined an experimentally burned watershed and two reference watersheds that differ in permafrost coverage (high, 53%; medium-burn, 18%; and low, 4%) during the FROSTFIRE prescribed burn in July 1999. The fire elevated stream nitrate concentrations for a short period during the first post-fire storm, but nitrate declined thereafter, suggesting that less severe fires that leave an intact riparian zone may have only a short-term effect on stream chemistry. Nevertheless, we found fundamental...
