Map containing historical census data from 1900 - 2000 throughout the western United States at the county level. Data includes total population, population density, and percent population change by decade for each county. Population data was obtained from the US Census Bureau and joined to 1:2,000,000 scale National Atlas counties shapefile.

Greater sage-grouse population components devrived using an 18-km maximum connection distance. Analysis was conducted using the CONEFOR SENSINODE 2.2 software package and this dataset was developed from lek data obtained from the state wildlife agencies. Components containing < 5 leks have been removed in order to protect the location of single or small groups of leks.
Density of linear features, such as roads, power lines, telephone lines, and railroad tracks have been shown to influence synanthropic predator abundance patterns (Knight et al. 1995). Following Knight et al. (1995), we used linear features such as roads, railroads, and power line spatial data sets, but also included irrigation canals, to build a linear features spatial data set. However, we lacked spatial data on telephone and feeder-power lines and therefore our linear feature spatial data set vastly underestimates the number of linear features in some areas.
Cellular phone microwave towers registered with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Not all antennas are required to be registered with the FCC, therefore, this data set does not necessarily depict all cellular phone communication towers actually present on the landscape. The source data are updated weekly by the FCC as new permits are issued. However, this particular data set is designed for a specific analysis, and is planned to remain static as of the publication date (7/22/2007).
Powerlines in the western United States. Data was obtained from the ICEBMP existing utility corridors data set.
This model was constructed to model the risk of invasion by exotic plant species. Roads may directly influence exotic plant dispersal via disturbance during road construction or via alterations in soil regimes. For example, in Californian serpentine soil ecosystems, exotic plant species can be found up to 1km from the nearest road and Russian thistle (Salsola kali), an exotic forb growing along roads, is wind-dispersed over distances greater than 4km. Roads may also indirectly facilitate the dispersal of exotic grasses, such as crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), via human seeding along road verges or in burned areas near roads as a management strategy to curb the establishment of less desirable exotic grass...
All secondary roads in the western United States from the 2000 US Census TIGER/line files. Secondary roads are defined as all roadways not classified as an interstate, state highway, or federal highway.

A complete set of wells associated with oil, natural gas, and coal bed natural gas development in the western states as of August 31, 2005. This is a static dataset even though liquid energy development is a highly dynamic endeavor. Because these well location datasets are generally housed and managed by various state-based agencies (typically the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commissions) a uniform, spatially precise coverage for the has not been available to date. This layer consolidates the best available well location data from MT, WY, CO, and UT(ID does not report any liquid energy development) and standardizes the attributites. The user is cautioned that this layer only contains known and reported wells and...
A summary data set of all fire polygons we could locate as of December 2007. We used multiple datasets to develop this layer, including data gathered from the internet, publically available databases, and personal contacts with dozens of agency personnel throught the western U.S. Data were assessed for utility (but not accuracy) and formatted for consistency. Each source data set was then attributed consistently with fields for record number and year (of fire). Because various resource management entities map fires somewhat independently (especially in more recent years) we merged overlapping polygons for each year. Users are encouraged to understand the contents of this data file before using it.
