A digital model of the sedimentary Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system is composed of 20 rasters and hydrogeologic unit extent polygons. Rasters describe the top elevations of regional aquifers and confining units at a resolution of 2640 feet (1/2 mile). The rasters are clipped to the extent polygons, which represent the spatial extents of the hydrogeologic units onshore and several miles offshore. This three-dimensional hydrogeologic model was constructed as part of a U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program study of groundwater availability in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain (NACP) aquifer system, including parts of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina....

The USGS Geomagnetism Program operates a network of magnetic observatories that collect vector and scalar magnetometer data for use in Earth main-field modeling, geophysics research, space physics research, and space weather hazard assessment and mitigation. Until mid-2011, only 1-minute time resolution magnetic field measurements were archived with the INTERMAGNET consortium following international magnetic observatory standards. 1-second time resolution magnetic field measurements, which had already been collected by all the USGS observatories for up to almost a decade prior, started being archived with INTERMAGNET on June 13, 2011, or July 27, 2012 in the case of the more recently constructed Deadhorse (DED)...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District has produced this dataset of groundwater‐level altitudes and groundwater‐level altitude changes in the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in the Houston‐Galveston region, Texas. This dataset shows current‐year (2018) groundwater‐level altitudes for each aquifer, 5‐year (2013‐18) groundwater‐level changes for each aquifer, long‐term (1990‐2018 and 1977‐2018) groundwater‐level changes for the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers, and long‐term (2000‐2018) groundwater‐level change for the Jasper aquifer. The groundwater‐level measurements...

Observing and counting bats is extremely difficult. Bats hide during the day, fly in darkness, and most species in the United States (US) become inactive and inaccessible in cryptic hibernation sites for 7-8 months each year. More than 40 different species of bats occur year-round in the US, yet reasonable population estimates exist for very few. Populations of US bats face new and unprecedented threats from white-nose syndrome (WNS) and industrial wind turbines. Like WNS, wind energy development might adversely affect entire populations of bats. Species of bats dying at wind turbines in the greatest numbers rank among the most cryptic, elusive, and poorly understood. Hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus) compose approximately...

Each release of NLCD generates a complete set of directly comparable products. These products must be used together for correct analysis. You can find the latest suite of synced products at www.mrlc.gov. The National Land Cover Database 2001 land cover layer for mapping zones 01-66 was produced through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. The MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies (www.mrlc.gov), consisting of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National...

RiverWare simulated daily averaged surface water permit requested diversions and diversions modeled in the spatially refined model region within the Red River Basin. Values reported are for 18 different climate projection scenarios and a historical scenario, from 2010 through 2099 and 1976 through 2005, respectively. The RiverWare model was used to determine the impacts on regulated flows, resevoir levels, and water permit reliability. RiverWare was used for this project because of its ability to simulate water use, reservoir operations, and local/interstate regulations.

Native Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii spp. populations in the western U.S. have declined in part due to displacement by nonnative trout, but mechanisms to explain displacement vary by species and geography. Using a production framework, we demonstrated allopatric populations of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout O. c. virginalis (RGCT) exhibited consistently higher biomass and secondary production rates (0.19–0.92 g DM·m-2·yr-1) than sympatric populations with Brown Trout Salmo trutta (0.01–0.05 g DM·m-2·yr-1) and that an interactive temperature effect on RGCT biomass and production was overshadowed by the presence of Brown Trout across cold and warm streams. Interestingly, over half of trout production was fueled...

This portion of the USGS data release presents bathymetry data collected during surveys performed on the Elwha River delta, Washington in July 2015 (USGS Field Activity Number 2015-648-FA). Bathymetry data were collected using two personal watercraft (PWCs), each equipped with single-beam sonar systems and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. The PWC sonar systems consisted of an Odom Echotrac CV-100 single-beam echosounder and 200 kHz transducer with a 9° beam angle. Raw acoustic backscatter returns were digitized by the echosounder with a vertical resolution of 1.25 cm. Depths from the echosounders were computed using sound velocity profiles measured using a YSI CastAway CTD during the survey....
