Historical water and gas chemistry data from geothermal areas are important for detecting long-term patterns, informing geothermal energy exploration, development, and use, and for contextualizing more recent data. The U.S. Geological survey has published water and gas chemistry data from geothermal areas in the western United States, which is primarily available as scanned PDF files. This makes the data difficult to access or include in large-scale data analysis. This data release provides digitized and reformatted data from 20 previously published U.S. Geological Survey Open-File reports and journal articles, representing 1867 water chemistry samples and 313 gas chemistry samples. All data have been standardized...

An investigation was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs that found 1,132 transportation and utility assets in Indiana are vulnerable to fluvial erosion hazards due to close proximity to actively migrating streams. Locations of transportation assets (bridges, roadways, and railroad lines) and selected utility assets (high-capacity overhead power-transmission lines, underground pipelines, water treatment facilities, and in-channel dams) were determined using aerial imagery hosted by the Google Earth platform. Identified assets were aggregated by stream reach, county, and class. The contents of this data release include (1) a comma-delimited...
These data are an expanded geospatial representation of liquefaction probability for the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. These data supplement the liquefaction probability analysis completed by Jones and others (2017) for the earthquake hazards volume of the HayWired earthquake scenario, which was the product of an analysis that created a detailed liquefaction probability map covering the northern Santa Clara County and western Alameda County areas. This expanded liquefaction probability dataset makes use of FEMA's Hazus-MH 2.1 loss-estimation software and liquefaction susceptibility data by Knudsen...

Digital flood-inundation maps for a 6.7-mile reach of Joachim Creek, De Soto, Missouri, were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the city of De Soto, Missouri. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Science web site at https://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage 07019500 on Joachim Creek at De Soto, Missouri. Near-real-time stages at this streamgage may be obtained on the internet from the USGS National Water Information System at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ or the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic...
We performed hourly monitoring of conditions at the Two Towers landslide located in northern California near the town of Zenia. Monitored conditions included rainfall, groundwater head, horizontal total stress, horizontal effective stress, vertical soil deformation, and subsurface displacement. Data were acquired November 11, 2014–July 22, 2017, except for times during which power failure occurred; data for these times are given as “NAN” (not a number). Rainfall data are provided in millimeters during the past hour (mm/hr). Groundwater heads are provided in meters (m) above the landslide base. Horizontal stresses are provided in kilopascals (kPa). Vertical soil deformation data are provided in terms of length (centimeters,...

The 25 April 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake and its aftershocks triggered about 25,000 landslides over an area of more than 30,000 km2 in the Greater and Lesser Himalaya of Nepal and China. In order to understand the relation among landslide location, earthquake shaking, topography, tectonic geologic and climatic setting, earthquake-triggered landslides were mapped using high-resolution (<1m pixel resolution) pre- and post-event satellite imagery. Source and runout areas were differentiated and mapped separately. The data accompany an interpretive paper published in the journal Geomorphology. The published products are separate ESRI ArcMap 10.2.2 shapefiles that comprise: (i) mapped landslide source areas, (ii)...
Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

Summary: Siliceous sinter samples were collected from multiple geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in 2018. These silica sinter samples were collected and analyzed as a part of a multi-year research investigation into the age and geochemistry of hydrothermal features in the Upper Geyser Basin. Samples were collected along the stratigraphy of each feature. From these samples, we report 10Be, U-series, and 14C ages. Samples collected from Giant and Castle Geyser were further analyzed for their mineralogy, major and trace element concentrations, water content, and rare earth elements. This research was conducted under Yellowstone Research Permit YELL-2018-SCI-8030 and YELL-2018-SCI-5910....

Two marine geological surveys were conducted in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts, in May 2016 and May 2017 by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of an agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to map the geology of the sea floor offshore of Massachusetts. Samples of surficial sediment and photographs of the sea floor were collected at 76 sampling sites within the survey area, and sea-floor videos were collected at 75 of the sites. The sediment data and the observations from the photos and videos are used to explore the nature of the sea floor; in conjunction with high-resolution geophysical data, the observations are used to make interpretive maps of sedimentary environments and validate acoustic...

This report evaluates the volcano-related hazards, including regional mafic lava flows, silicic lava domes, pyroclastic flows, lahars, and volcanic ash, of the Lassen region, California, which is here defined as an area between the Pit River on the north and the southern limit of active Cascade volcanism, approximately 5–10 km south of the southern boundary of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Most active volcanism occurs in a zone about 40 km wide between Viola on the west and the eastern boundary of Caribou Wilderness Area, but sparser volcanism in the west extends the width of this zone to about 75 km. All vents and deposits known or estimated to be less than 100,000 years are identified and considered in establishing...
This USGS data release includes data related to the Science magazine manuscript “Cyclic lava effusion during the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano” by Patrick et al. The data release includes 1) original video as well as thermal, and timelapse images of lava in the proximal Fissure 8 channel, 2) derived estimates of lava level in the channel and bulk effusion rates (not corrected for vesicles), 3) infrasound data, and 4) other miscellaneous supporting data. The manuscript abstract is as follows: “Lava flows present a recurring threat to communities on active volcanoes, and volumetric eruption rate is one of the primary factors controlling flow behavior and hazard. The timescales and driving forces of eruption rate...
