Forest Retention Index classes for the southeastern United States at 2040 were processed using the Forest Retention Decision Tree and rendered on a 30-meter by 30-meter grid. The Forest Retention Index is used only for current forestland, identified using National Land Cover Database 2011. Many datasets were used as inputs for the Forest Retention Decision Tree, and they can be grouped into five broad categories: Protected, Tier 1 Priority, Tier 2 Priority, Threats to Forest Retention, and Socio-Economic Value of Forests. The project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” assessed terrestrial ecological systems in terms of suitability as broadly defined habitats supporting species identified in wildlife action plans. Assessment of three Southern Yellow Pine Forest classes (Longleaf Pine Flatwoods, Longleaf Pine Woodland, Shortleaf/Loblolly Pine Woodland) included threshold values associated with landscape configuration and patch size. Per-pixel assessment of these thresholds required a layer describing pine forest areas in the landscape. The Potential Reforestation Index geospatial data product is a companion to the Forest Retention Index product from the Mapping the South’s Forests of the Future project. The Retention Index describes the likelihood that existing forests will remain in a forested condition at decadal time steps through 2060. The Potential Reforestation Index describes the likelihood that a non-forested land unit will be converted to forest cover at those same time steps. This layer identifies terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats associated with species of greatest conservation need as described in Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South region of the United States. Condition Index scores are assigned on a per-grid-cell basis at 30-meter resolution. Watersheds selected to comprise the study are for the project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South.” This selection represents an expansion of the boundary of the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPO LCC). The expansion process selected one or two counties in all directions and included the entire state of Louisiana. The “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project developed a map of Broadly Defined Habitats (BDH) associated with wildlife species of conservation concern. The map used Ecological Mapping Systems data from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Texas and Ecological System Mapping data from Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) in Oklahoma as inputs. Those products were resampled from 10 to 30-meter resolution and translated to BDH classes.

This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This product is derived from the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index layer, which is a product of the same project. The “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project obtained per-pixel percent overstory canopy data from the NLCD 2011 USFS Tree Canopy analytical (CONUS) layer. This layer was clipped to the study area boundary and projected to NAD 1983 Albers. Individual binary layers expressing desired ranges of percent overstory canopy cover were developed for each targeted Broadly Defined Habitat (BDH) class from this layer.

LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation type (Vintage April 2017, acquired April 2018) is a principle input layer to the Broadly Defined Habitat (BDH) map developed by the “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project. This version clips the LANDFIRE product to the project study area. The 281 ecological system and land cover classes in this map were crosswalked to the fifteen BDH classes used by the project.
