Puhimau thermal area, located in the upper East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai`i formed around 1936 when heat and gases migrated to the surface following a magma intrusion. As of April 2020, the area is about 0.2 km2 in size with regions of steaming ground. The site may be valuable for monitoring changes in gas and heat emissions related to movement of magma down the rift zone. On November 4-5, 2019 we used the accumulation chamber method and thermocouple probes to make 164 measurements of soil CO2 flux and temperature (20 cm depth) at 30-m spacing on a 0.2 km2 grid. Three gas samples were collected from areas of steaming ground on November 5-6, 2019 and analyzed for bulk chemical and carbon isotope (d13C-CO2)...

This data release includes monthly census data of 120 out-planted ʻōhiʻa seedlings in different treatment groups and associated metadata from February 2019 - February 2020 at Keaukaha Military Reservation in Hilo, HI. Six seedlings each were planted around 20 focal trees, half of which tested positive for Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, half of which tested negative. Three of the six seedlings were weeded for nearby invasive species and the other three were not. Initial height of seedlings, whether they were damaged at time of planting, and whether they were initially grown in a dibble tube or pot was also recorded. After initial damage to many seedlings by ungulates, we decided to apply a fencing treatment for ungulate exclusion...

This data release includes data and metadata on a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Specifically this data decribes the percent cover of grass over time in plots where we experimantally added varying levels of seed rain and/or manipulated grass biomass manually.
This data release includes data and metadata on bird-mediated and passive seed rain for sites selected to have a range of understory cover under canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa). All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. Quantifying natural seed rain rates in different habitat types was needed to better understand how these thresholds function.

This data release includes data and metadata on seedling germination and survival for a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration. As a part of that, we created an experiment that varied seed rain in order to ascertain if seedling recruitment exhibits threshold effects.
This data release includes data and metadata on tree and shrub identity and basal area within 5 m2 radius plots centered around old growth Acacia koa, planted Acacia koa, old growth Metrosideros polymorpha, and in open, exotic grass dominated sites. Our goal was to ask if understory communities differed between these habitat types and how this relates to other ecosystem factors such as seed rain and exotic grass cover. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration.

On Hawai‘i’s mountains, cloud droplets, propelled by strong winds, are deposited on plants, where they accumulate and drip to the ground, adding water over and above that supplied by rainfall. Prior studies show that the amount of intercepted cloud water is substantial, and variable from place to place. Estimates of the spatial patterns of cloud water interception (CWI), the fog-related effects on plants, and the contributions of fog to groundwater recharge and surface water flows are needed to better understand the water cycle and predict effects of climate change on water supply and ecosystems. We will make measurements of fog, wind, fog interception, soil moisture, and fog effects on plant water use and plant...
