This dataset is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative. These data represent the flowline network in the Green Bay Restoration Assessment (GBRA). It is attributed with the number of disconnections (e.g., road crossings) between the reach and Lake Ontario. The more road crossings on a flowline the more disconnected that area is from the lake and the less suitable it will be for restoration. These data help identify the condition of hydrologic separation between potential restoration areas and Lake Ontario. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections, such as culverts, between the reach and the water body requiring no flow network modification...

Groundwater age distributions and susceptibility to natural and anthropogenic contaminants were assessed for selected wells, streambed piezometers, and springs in southeastern Minnesota. The data provide information to understand how long it will take to observe groundwater quality improvements from best management practices implemented at land surface to reduce losses of nitrate (and other chemicals) from agricultural practices. Nineteen water samples were collected from ten wells, three streambed piezometers, and four springs between August 2020 and September 2022. Two of these samples are field replicate samples collected from a spring site and a well site. A child item contains historical data from 15 water...

Three regression models were developed for describing variability of host-specific flux data in eight Great Lakes tributaries. Models include one for Lachnospiraceae flux, one for human bacteroides flux, and one for ruminant bacteroides flux. Models were developed using the R project for statistical computing with core functionality and the survival, smwrBase, and smwrQW packages. Predictor variables for these models are included in the data file and input files provided. These include sampling dates and times, rainfall depth, percent of watershed underlain by tile drainage, cattle population (for the ruminant marker model) and human population (for the human marker models). Sample collection and laboratory analyses...

This data release contains input data used in model development and TIF raster files used to predict the probability of high arsenic (As) and high manganese (Mn) in groundwater within the glacial aquifer system in the northern United States. Input data include measured As and Mn concentrations at groundwater wells, and associated predictor variable data. The probability of high As and high Mn was predicted using boosted regression tree methods using the gbm package in R version 4.0.0. The response variables for individual models were the occurrence of: (1) As >10 µg/L, and (2) Mn >300 µg/L. Water-quality data were compiled from three sources, as described in Wilson and others (2019): a compilation of data from numerous...

A series of simple linear regression models were developed for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgage at Rice Creek below Highway 8 in Mounds View, Minnesota (USGS station number 05288580). The simple linear regression models were calibrated using streamflow data to estimate suspended-sediment (total, fines, and sands) and bedload. Data were collected during water years 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2019. The estimates from the simple linear regressions were used to calculate loads for water years 2010 through 2019. The calibrated simple linear regression models were used to improve understanding of sediment transport processes and increase accuracy of estimating sediment and loads for Rice Creek. Two multidimensional...

This dataset includes pesticides and pesticide transformation products in 15 tributaries of the Great Lakes. Pesticides were monitored using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) to estimate concentrations in water following standard protocols (Alvarez, 2010) in June and July 2016. POCIS extracts were analyzed for 225 chemicals (USGS National Water Quality Laboratory schedule 5437, Sandstrom and others, 2016), for which 129 chemicals also have POCIS uptake rates, allowing calculations of time-weighted mean concentration over the approximately 30 day deployment (Alvarez and others, 2008). Collectively, there were 97 chemicals detected, and time-weighted mean concentrations could be calculated for 95...

This topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) mosaic represents the topography and bathymetry for the Milwaukee River Estuary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and adjacent terrestrial and Lake Michigan nearshore coastal areas. The TBDEM was produced in support of modeling and for developing a physical habitat framework to help with understanding the effects from multidirectional currents and seiche effects associated with the mixing of river flows with Lake Michigan backwater. The TBDEM mosaic is built off existing terrestrial, nearshore, and estuary frameworks developed for other areas around the Great Lakes and the Milwaukee River Harbor. Ranging from 2008-2015, land elevations derived from lidar and historic topographic...

Avian botulism toxicity is a common cause of death to water and shore birds that live near or migrate through Lake Michigan. The botulism neuro-toxin type E (bontE) gene is responsible for the production of botulinum neurotoxin type E. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) was performed using a Step One Plus Thermocycler (Applied Biosystems) and protocol described in Getchell and others, 2011, Journal of Aquatic Animal Health. The assay was used to assess microbial community DNA obtained from environmental samples that were collected by Great Lakes Science Center and by National Park Service from 2011 to 2014 for the bontE gene. Samples were obtained by ponar grab or by divers and matrices collected...

DRAINMOD, a field-scale, process-based, distributed model (Skaggs, 1980; https://www.bae.ncsu.edu/agricultural-water-management/DRAINMOD/), was used to simulate subsurface drainage flow and field water-surface elevations. DRAINMOD simulations are often used to optimize drainage patterns for agricultural fields with subsurface drainage. For this study, the model results were also used to simulate deep seepage rates. Deep seepage is the amount of water that moves past the agricultural drains. These deep seepage rates were then used as a surrogate for potential groundwater recharge rates. A total of nine different scenarios were run, each sceanrio corresponding to a different location on one of three different field...

Median summer water yields and resultant flows are used in Michigan to regulate large water withdrawals to help prevent negative effects on characteristic fish populations. Large water withdrawals commonly are associated with irrigation in rural areas. In an earlier statewide report, an index-flow statistic for the period of record, defined as the median flow during the summer month of lowest flow, was used to characterize median summer flows and associated water yields. In this report, the annual series of median summer water yields for the period July 1 through September 30 within the period of record is used to characterize median summer water yields. For 27 streamgages included in both reports, the average index...

This USGS data release presents historic shorelines of Lake Superior near Odanah, Wisconsin encompassing the delta complex of the Bad River from 1852 to 2013 compiled in a Geographic Information System. The coverage of the shorelines starts approximately 8 km northeast of Ashland and extends for about 40 km to approximately 3 km east of the Bad River mouth. The shorelines were derived from land survey maps, topographic maps (USGS), and aerial photographs. The data set includes 10 shorelines for the years 1852, 1934, 1939, 1953, 1963, 1979, 1986, 1992, 1999, and 2013. Detail in the initial years of the shorelines (1852, 1934) may appear to be coarser having been hand drawn. Following 1939, all the shorelines were...

Confined (or buried) aquifers overlain by till confining units are used to supply drinking water to millions of people. Till confining units are typically conceptualized as having very low potential for transmitting water. Thus, buried aquifers are thought to be less susceptible to surface contamination, but may recharge very slowly and may be prone to unsustainable groundwater withdrawals. Quantification of the recharge (leakage) rate through till is essential to understanding the long-term sustainability of groundwater withdrawals from buried aquifers and yet few data exist on the hydraulic properties of till and groundwater flux through till. The information contained in this data release is generated from field...

The Fox River network, which includes Apple Creek, contributes a significant amount of total phosphorus (P), including both sediment-bound P (sed-P) and dissolved reactive P (DRP, also known as orthophosphate) and suspended sediment to Green Bay/Lake Michigan. Most headwater streams of the Fox River are predominantly agricultural in land use, interspersed with rural communities and the industrialized Fox River Valley corridor. Implementation of best management practices on agricultural operations has worked to limit the amount of material that is carried to the stream from cropland. However, several studies have shown streambank erosion to be another source of suspended sediment in these streams. These files contain...
The Kalamazoo River Area of Concern (AOC) in Michigan has multiple dams in various stages of removal. Following dam removal, river restoration activities will occur in impacted reaches. Hydrogeomorphic data from relatively undisturbed and hydraulically stable river reaches are commonly used to inform the design parameters of river restoration projects. Reference reaches should be selected that operate under similar prevailing boundary conditions as target restoration reaches, including water and sediment regime, valley and channel slope, valley confinement, bank heights, and riparian vegetation. The datasets contained in this data release represent the results of a geomorphic assessment of the Kalamazoo River to...

Note: This data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable. Two types of passive samplers for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) analysis were deployed in the Clinton River Area of Concern in 2019: semipermeable membrane devices for water and in-stream sediment samplers. Samplers were deployed in July 2019 and retrieved in August 2019. Additionally, bank sediment samples for PCB analysis were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in August 2019 and catch basin bottom material samples for PCB analysis were collected by LimnoTech in November 2019 under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These data are a part of a larger study and associated USGS report (https://doi.org/TBD).

This data release contains datasets developed for the purpose of training and applying random forest models to the Mississippi Embayment Regional Study Area. The random forest models are designed to predict total stream flow and baseflow as a function of a combination of watershed characteristics and monthly weather data. These datasets are associated with a report (SIR 2022-5079) and code contained in a USGS GitLab repository. The GitLab repository (https://code.usgs.gov/map/maprandomforest/) contains much more information about how these data may be used to supply predictions of stream flow and baseflow.
