Three regression models were developed for describing variability of host-specific flux data in eight Great Lakes tributaries. Models include one for Lachnospiraceae flux, one for human bacteroides flux, and one for ruminant bacteroides flux. Models were developed using the R project for statistical computing with core functionality and the survival, smwrBase, and smwrQW packages. Predictor variables for these models are included in the data file and input files provided. These include sampling dates and times, rainfall depth, percent of watershed underlain by tile drainage, cattle population (for the ruminant marker model) and human population (for the human marker models). Sample collection and laboratory analyses...

This data release contains input data used in model development and TIF raster files used to predict the probability of high arsenic (As) and high manganese (Mn) in groundwater within the glacial aquifer system in the northern United States. Input data include measured As and Mn concentrations at groundwater wells, and associated predictor variable data. The probability of high As and high Mn was predicted using boosted regression tree methods using the gbm package in R version 4.0.0. The response variables for individual models were the occurrence of: (1) As >10 µg/L, and (2) Mn >300 µg/L. Water-quality data were compiled from three sources, as described in Wilson and others (2019): a compilation of data from numerous...

Median summer water yields and resultant flows are used in Michigan to regulate large water withdrawals to help prevent negative effects on characteristic fish populations. Large water withdrawals commonly are associated with irrigation in rural areas. In an earlier statewide report, an index-flow statistic for the period of record, defined as the median flow during the summer month of lowest flow, was used to characterize median summer flows and associated water yields. In this report, the annual series of median summer water yields for the period July 1 through September 30 within the period of record is used to characterize median summer water yields. For 27 streamgages included in both reports, the average index...

This dataset consists of concentration and isotopic data for a method designed to isolate and analyze methylmercury. Several matrices (lab-based, and natural) were tested to ensure that the method was capable of recovering methylmercury amendments. Additionally, natural matrices (plankton and sediment) with ambient methylmercury were also analyzed to ensure that the method could be successfully applied to natural matrices. Separation tests for sediment, water, and biotic matrices showed acceptable recoveries (98 ± 5%, n = 54) and reproducible δ202Hg isotope results (2SD < 0.15 ‰) down to 5 ng of MeHg. This dataset is part of a complimentary paper published in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00216-019-02277-0)...

Avian botulism toxicity is a common cause of death to water and shore birds that live near or migrate through Lake Michigan. The botulism neuro-toxin type E (bontE) gene is responsible for the production of botulinum neurotoxin type E. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) was performed using a Step One Plus Thermocycler (Applied Biosystems) and protocol described in Getchell and others, 2011, Journal of Aquatic Animal Health. The assay was used to assess microbial community DNA obtained from environmental samples that were collected by Great Lakes Science Center and by National Park Service from 2011 to 2014 for the bontE gene. Samples were obtained by ponar grab or by divers and matrices collected...

Confined (or buried) aquifers overlain by till confining units are used to supply drinking water to millions of people. Till confining units are typically conceptualized as having very low potential for transmitting water. Thus, buried aquifers are thought to be less susceptible to surface contamination, but may recharge very slowly and may be prone to unsustainable groundwater withdrawals. Quantification of the recharge (leakage) rate through till is essential to understanding the long-term sustainability of groundwater withdrawals from buried aquifers and yet few data exist on the hydraulic properties of till and groundwater flux through till. The information contained in this data release is generated from field...

The U.S. Geological Survey, Voyageurs National Park, South Dakota State University, and Missouri Department of Conservation conducted a cooperative study to measure ratios of strontium to calcium (Sr:Ca) in cross sections of pectoral fin rays obtained from lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) captured in lakes and rivers of Namakan Reservoir in Minnesota and Ontario. We measured Sr:Ca ratios in cross sections of 37 pectoral fin rays collected from 10 locations (5 rivers and 5 lakes) in Namakan Reservoir as part of a larger study to investigate whether relations between Sr:Ca in water and pectoral fin rays were significant and useful for determining migratory histories of lake sturgeon in Namakan Reservoir. Pectoral...

In 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey sampled benthic algae and invertebrates, and fish to assess the condition of the aquatic communities and water quality in 14 wadable streams near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additional community sampling was also done at a subset of three sites in 2011 and 2012 to assess temporal variation. Selected environmental (physical and chemical) data in the streams were collected to evaluate potential relations to the biota and the ecological health of the streams. Physical and chemical data included land-use/land cover; streamflow from USGS gages (except at two creeks that were not gaged); stream habitat; microhabitat at invertebrate collection points (depth, velocity,...

Five discrete groundwater seepage measurements were collected to make a direct measurement of the flux of water across the sediment-water interface. Change in volume/time is the volumetric rate of flow. The volumetric rate of flow was used to calculate flux velocity (distance/time), by dividing the specific area of the seepage meter (2.70-square-feet). The change in volume over the time the seepage test was conducted is the volumetric flow rate of ground water seepage. Flux velocity could be multiplied by the study area to acquire a shallow groundwater flux.

Three eutrophication models (mass balance, BATHUB, and Jensen models) were developed and calibrated for the Winnebago Pools, Wisconsin. These models were used to quantify the input of phosphorus from the sediments of the lakes, and determine how the water quality (total phosphorus concentration, chlorophyll a concentrations, and Secchi depth) should respond to changes in phosphorus loading from the watershed. Each of the models were developed using flow and phosphorus inputs from internal and external sources. This data release is subdivided into 4 parts: 1) Lake Winnebago water-quality data; 2) Mass balance of water and phosphorus for Lake Winnebago, with estimated internal loading of phosphorus estimates; 3) BATHTUB...
This data release focuses on the nutrient and sediment concentrations, loads, and yields at USGS surface and subsurface-tile edge-of-field (EOF) agricultural monitoring sites in Great Lakes States. Water quality and rainfall metrics are summarized by individual flow events to evaluate the contribution of EOF losses to headwater stream networks in agricultural landscapes. USGS EOF stations are components of multiple local, state, and federal studies with goals of characterizing agricultural influences on water quality and/or documenting water-quality changes as a result of conservation adoption. As part of this data release, data from within 374 site years are provided that were developed from 5 local, state, and...

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and isotopic compositions were collected in sediments, soils, and suspended particulate matter from Gruber's Grove Bay (GGB) and upstream reference sites to inform future remedial efforts. The highest concentrations and isotopic signatures (δ202Hg) were observed in soils collected from historic water settling ponds from the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP). Sediments from the upper portion of GGB showed higher isotopic compositions than sediments from the Wisconsin River. Hg concentrations in sediments were also higher in the upper portion of GGB and decreased towards the river. Sediments collected from the GGB margin (the confluence with the Wisconsin River) were within the concentration...

The City of Kentwood (MI) has been faced with repetitive flooding from Plaster Creek near the intersection of Shaffer Avenue SE and 36th Street SE. Nearby businesses and public and private property are at risk for flood damage; as well as degradation of public infrastructure including bridges, exposure of subsurface sanitary sewer lines, and damage to storm water systems. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, would like to develop a management plan through the use of a hydraulic model of the impacted river reaches. To support this effort, topographic and bathymetric surveys of Plaster Creek, Little Plaster Creek, and associated bridges and structures are needed. During the summer of 2018, the U.S....
