This Open-File report is a digital geologic map database. This digital map database is compiled from previously published sources combined with some new mapping and modifications in nomenclature. The geologic map database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U. S. Geological Survey. For detailed descriptions of the units, their stratigraphic relations and sources of geologic mapping consult Yerkes and Campbell (1993).

This dataset is a polygon coverage of the thickness of the overburden of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed, in feet. It was produced by importing 1:100,000 (30-minute) and 1:24,000 scale (7.5-minute) digital elevation models (DEM) into ARC, and merging the lattices into one. The structure elevation grid for the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed was subtracted from the surface elevation grid, creating overburden thickness. This grid was contoured within the known extent of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed into 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 foot lines. This vector file was imported to ARC. This is a coverage of the Colorado Plateau coal assessment study area. The study area outline was drawn on the county lines that most closely outline the coal-bearing rocks in the Colorado Plateau Region. The county outlines originate from a national coverage for which lines were extracted from U.S. Census 1990 TIGER/line files using an AML program written by Nebert, D., and Negri, M., USGS-Water Resources Division (WRD), running on two Data General 6220 servers.

This is an Arc/Info coverage showing the general elevation of the top of the Herrin (No. 6) coal in Illinois. These 100-foot isolines were contoured by Earthvision software using more than 22,000 data points. The data was not contoured using fault lines for control and no manual adjustments were made to the contours to reflect the presence of known faults. Limited data were available in the north central and central portions of the state. This data set is intended for use at a scale of 1:750,000.

The Muddy Creek watershed, part of the Upper Colorado River watershed, is a semi-arid catchment in a sagebrush steppe ecosystem. A synoptic watershed assessment was conducted in 2010 to identify areas within the watershed that are more susceptible to mobilization of trace elements that occur in soils forming on marine shale. Samples of soil, stream sediment, and water were collected and assayed for major elements and a suite of trace elements. Formation waters discharged from two wells within the watershed were sampled in 2011 to evaluate their potential contribution of organic carbon, nitrogen (N) species, and trace elements to surface waters. Limits on the time and financial resources available for monitoring efforts, coupled with the complexities of natural resources and stakeholders, are challenges in resource monitoring. To help address these and related challenges, the USGS Monitoring Team (MT) has linked conceptual monitoring specialists with habitat and wildlife biologists to inform and develop creative, scientifically defensible approaches for monitoring the status and trends of populations and habitats across the WLCI region. Regional-scale studies, such as those being conducted for the WLCI, are well suited for the use of remote-sensing techniques. Derivative products from remote-sensing instruments, such as Landsat, have been used successfully for decades in studies of geology, vegetation, environmental change, and many other types of scientific research. In the WLCI region, the quality and condition of sagebrush steppe is a concern given the extent of rangewide land-use change, habitat conversion, and rapid energy development in sagebrush systems. Three migratory songbird species are considered near-obligates of sagebrush shrublands: Brewer’s and sagebrush sparrows and sage thrasher, all of which are designated Species of Great Conservation Need in Wyoming (Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 2010) and nest in Green River Basin.
