In 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2013, the U.S. Geological Survey sampled benthic algae and invertebrates, and fish to assess the condition of the aquatic communities and water quality in 14 wadable streams near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additional community sampling was also done at a subset of three sites in 2011 and 2012 to assess temporal variation. Selected environmental (physical and chemical) data in the streams were collected to evaluate potential relations to the biota and the ecological health of the streams. Aquatic ecological surveys are valuable to understanding the interaction between the biotic and abiotic components in rivers and streams. However, large-scale assessments of the water chemistry, geomorphology, and ecological community are usually not feasible due to limited resources. Beginning in 2013, the Regional Stream Quality Assessment Project of the US Geological Survey’s National Water Quality Program, began sampling 89-120 streams in each of 5 regions across the conterminous United States—the Midwest (2013), Southeast (2014), Pacific Northwest (2015), Northeast (2016), and California (2017). Data are for zooplankton communities sampled in 2016 at the Sheboygan River Area of Concern and two comparison sites, the Kewaunee River and the Manitowoc River, which have similar physical and chemical characteristics. Zooplankton were collected by using tows from depth to the surface with a 63 micrometer mesh plankton net. Physical and chemical data that were sampled concurrently (specific conductance, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen) in water by use of a multi-parameter water-quality sonde, and the results of field quality assurance quality control are also included.
