This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. Zebra and quagga mussel veligers were exposed to eleven distinct cultures (isolates) of cyanobacteria representing Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Dolichospermum, Microcystis, and Planktothrix species and the cyanotoxin microcystin to determine the lethality of cyanobacteria on dreissenid veligers. Six-day laboratory bioassays were performed in microplates using dreissenid veligers collected from the Detroit River, Michigan, USA. Veligers were exposed to increasing concentrations of cyanobacteria and microcystin using the green algae Chlorella minutissima as a control. These data describe the catch and biological data from 363 bottom-set gill-net lifts distributed throughout Lake Michigan (including main basin and Green Bay) between April and November in 1930–1932. Data collected from the R/V Fulmar were recorded in notebooks and are now archived at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Great Lakes Science Center. Each lift included 1–7 gangs of linen gill nets. Each gang comprised 3–5 panels each having a length of 155 m, a height of 1.5 m, and a (stretch-)mesh size of either 60, 64, 67, 70, or 76 mm. The digitization of the Fulmar data notebooks was started in the late 1990s and finished in this study.

The data document the results of several microbe bioassays performed by the USGS on Phragmites australis plants, including those performed on mature leaves, seedlings, and dead leaf tissues exploration of the literature to find accounts of microbes associated with Phragmites worldwide. For the bioassays, we prepared 162 pure cultures isolated from Phragmites plants in North America along the east coast, Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes area, 125 of which were from a previous study, and 38 represent new collections. Laboratory bioassays were conducted between 2014-2016 at Wayne State University in cooperation with USGS to determine if different species of cyanobacteria influence quagga mussel spawning and fertilization success. The data describes the algal cultures tested and their density/concentration, the number of individuals tested, and the spawning and fertilization success of quagga mussels exposed to the cyanobacteria and those that were not (control).

This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Data are from biological and physical environmental assessments conducted during 2018 in the lower Rouge River, MI. Sites were located upstream, downstream, and within the concrete channel section of the lower Rouge River. Water quality parameters, riparian zone characteristics, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and river channel characteristics (water depth, flow, velocity) were assessed during 2018 from June-October. Previously established standardized sampling methods were used during all assessments.

Monitoring of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the eggs of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) collected from lakes Huron and Michigan has been conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey since the mid-1990’s. The results of this monitoring effort have been used by natural resource management agencies and native American tribes within the Great Lakes basin to evaluate the reproductive health of lake trout. The data in this release are the thiamine concentrations measured in lake trout collected from 1996-2018. Results are reported as total thiamine (nmol/g-egg), collection site, lake, year collected, and reference to the analysis methods.

Ice breakup dates of Chequamegon Bay, Lake Superior from 1911 to 2020 were compiled by Lori Evrard (USGS, GLSC, Lake Superior Biological Station, Ashland, WI). Ice breakup date is the day in spring when winter ice cover substantially leaves a water body. Local residents deem "ice breakup" as when the ice moves northeast of a line straight across Chequamegon Bay out from Ellis Avenue (State highway 13). Another way ice breakup was determined has been if you could drive a boat from the outlet of Fish Creek to Houghton Point. These data were collected to examine water mixing in the lower Maumee River to determine the extent to which water from Lake Erie backflows into the river, and under what conditions this occurs. We used a combination of fixed hydrologic gauges; water chemistry including stable isotopes and conservative tracers; and direct physical measurements to estimate the percentages of lake and river water at both fixed sites and transects. Those results were compared with concurrent flows and estimates of seiche activity. To determine the differences in soil microbial community composition between native and non-native lineages of Phragmites, we sampled soils from eight sites in the Great Lakes basin where populations of native and non-native Phragmites co-occurred. In addition, we included samples of soils from 27 populations of Phragmites across the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts of the US. Samples were collected between July 2015 and September 2017. Tributaries support spawning habitats for three of the four major sub-stocks of Lake Erie walleye (Sander vitreus). Despite a history of anthropogenic degradation and the extirpation of other potamodromous species, the Maumee River, OH continues to support one of the largest fish migrations in the Laurentian Great Lakes. The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, housed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) was developed during a reevaluation of Lake Erie Areas of Concern (AOCs) from 1998-2000. These AOCs were recognized as such by the International Joint Commission (IJC) of the United States and Canada due to their severe water pollution problems. The dataset includes data from both the 1998-2000 reevaluation as well as data from other historical evaluations from the 1980’s to mid-1990’s for comparison where available. The development of a reliable method of age estimation for Grass Carp is necessary for the successful management of this invasive species. Multiple federal and state agencies with assistance from commercial fishers collected adult Grass Carp from 2012 to 2018. Ossified parts were collected from these fish, and age estimates from them were compared to develop an age estimation method. Here we provide the data used in that effort.

This Fish Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the fish communities sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). Any fish difficult to identify were preserved in buffered formalin for later identification. This dataset includes information about valley segment and catchment summaries, valley characteristics, instream habitat, and fish for valley segments, sites, and transects along four river mainstems in Ontario, Canada. Moving west to east, the rivers include the Grand River which ends in Lake Erie at Port Maitland, the Ganaraska River which ends in Lake Ontario at Port Hope, the Trent River which ends in the Bay of Quinte at Trenton, and the Petawawa River which ends in the Ottawa River at Petawawa. Data were collected to determine the abundance of nitrogen-fixing microorganisms in Cladophora algae growing on rocks, breakwall structures, or submerged dreissenid mussel beds around southern Lake Michigan. Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idella was imported to the United States in the 1960s for research into its usefulness as a biocontrol agent for nuisance aquatic vegetation. Escapees and intentionally stocked individuals founded wild, spawning populations in the Mississippi River and tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes. USGS-led research on the Sandusky River, a tributary to Lake Erie, demonstrated spawning of Grass Carp in 2015.
