These data represent modeled stream temperatures for a portion of a larger dataset known as the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) (https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog). This metadata record is a combined description for two spatial data feature types, vector lines and points, which cover the same geographic area. The line features are derived from NHDPlus (http://www.horizon-systems.com/NHDPlus/index.php) (USEPA and USGS, 2010) stream lines and the point data represent 1 km intervals along the NHDPlus stream network. Both datasets contain identical modeled stream temperature attributes. These modeled stream temperatures were generated as part of the U.S. Forest Service NorWeST stream temperature...

These data represent stream temperature observation locations for a portion of a larger study area known as the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog. These data were collected and processed as part of the NorWeST stream temperature project http://www.fs.fed.us/rm/boise/AWAE/projects/NorWeST.htmlThese thermograph locations and the attendant temperature observations were used as the baseline data for the NorWeST stream temperature modeling project. As a result, modeled temperatures will be most reliable in areas with the greatest density of thermographs. These data reside in ESRI shapefile format, ArcGIS version 9.3. The point shapefile extents correspond to...

The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will use, combine and optimize an array of remote sensing techniques to identify the most efficient process that characterizes grasslands and level of shrub component in those grasslands. The project will classify a pilot area, the Janos Grassland Priority Conservation Area, which contains the majority of the Janos Biosphere Reserve, using a variety of remote sensing approaches. In the process they will identify the best techniques for decomposing grass-shrub intermix at low densities and identify the best approaches for large scale application of remote sensing to classify the desert grasslands and shrublands.

In the desert southwest biodiversity is facing a changing landscape due to human population growth, expansion of energy development, and from the persistent effects of climate change among other threats. The 2012 Desert LCC science needs document recognized the importance of modeling and predicting habitat area, fragmentation and corridor network connectivity for a broad range of wildlife taxa. Tools and methods from conservation planning are available to address some of these issues, but tools to evaluate the expected benefits of corridors in mitigating climate change effects are only in their infancy. This USGS project will use quantitative spatial analysis and principles from landscape ecology to determine where...

These heatmaps show a top 3 invasive animal stressor for grasslands in the Chihuahuan Desert, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor across the landscape. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of the top 3 stressors that participants chose. Counties with a small number of participants were not adjusted for small sample size. These results were shared via a webinar...

We flew aerial line transect surveys between March 30 and May 3, 2012, to estimate the abundance of lesser prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) and lesser prairie-chicken leks in four habitat regions in the Great Plains U.S. Estimates were supplemented with data from surveys conducted by Texas Tech University in two regions in the Texas Panhandle and surveys conducted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in Oklahoma. We also estimated the number of mixed species leks which contained both lesser and greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and the number of hybrid lesser-greater prairie-chickens. The study area for 2012 included four regions containing the 2011 estimated occupied lesser...

This dataset shows the density of the intercepts of roads and streams in the Crown of the Continent and a 50km buffer. This dataset has been produced by merging the “National Road Network (NRN) - AB, Alberta” shapefile obtained from GeoBase , Digital Road Atlas (DRA) of British Colombia from GeoBC and “Roads from the Montana Transportation Framework MSDI” for Montana, US Provided by Montana State Library. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. The CMP is collaborative group of land managers, scientists,...

For the CCE, the riparian ecosystem was classified using three existing layers in a GIS:A. Streams network:— Streams_CCE_5kmBuffer_UTM11NAD83.shp.B. Water class of the landcover layer:— Landcover_CCE_5kmBuffer_UTM11NAD83.img.C. Digital elevation model (DEM) (22m Aster GDEM) provided by METI and NASA:— aster_dem.rrd.NOTE: Additional future considerations for the CCE may include the incorporation of fish-bearing streams which would extend the buffers in certain areas. We have considered location, water body type and size, as well as adjacent slopes for the broad application of a riparian buffer spanning national and state parks, rural and urban communities, as well as an international boundary, and we have used the...

There are critical needs for a nationwide compilation of reliable shoreline data. To meet these needs, the USGS has produced a comprehensive database of digital vector shorelines by compiling shoreline positions from pre-existing historical shoreline databases and by generating historical and modern shoreline data. Shorelines are compiled by state and generally correspond to one of four time periods: 1800s, 1920s-1930s, 1970s, and 1998-2002. Each shoreline may represent a compilation of data from one or more sources for one or more dates provided by one or more agencies. Details regarding source are provided in the ‘Data Quality Information’ section of this metadata report. Shoreline vectors derived from historic...

Rates of long-term and short-term shoreline change were generated in a GIS with the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 2.0, an ArcView extension developed by the USGS in cooperation with TPMC Environmental Services. The extension is designed to efficiently lead a user through the major steps of shoreline change analysis. This extension to ArcView contains three main components that define a baseline, generate orthogonal transects at a user-defined separation along the coast, and calculate rates of change (linear regression, endpoint rate, average of rates, average of endpoints, jackknife).

Wildlife carcasses recorded by Montana Department of Transportation, Idaho Department of Fish & Game, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service were aggregated to the nearest mile marker for major roads of the U.S. Northern Rockies. WGA connectivity flowlines were intersected with the road network and attributed to the nearest mile marker, along with their connectivity ranking, which indicates their expected relative importance to maintaining westwide connectivity. Values for potential risk factors, including average annual daily traffic (AADT), functional class, number of lanes, road surface width, landscape condition of surrounding habitat, ruggedness of surrounding landscape, and topographic position relative to surrounding...

Shapefile of a set of fires sampled from the GNLCC Large Fire Database, 1984-2011. This sampled was collected from across the total variability in climate within the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) study area. Additional detail about the topography, climate, and burn severity was collected for this identified sample, and used to model fire refugia and low-severity burn probability within the fire perimeters. Each fire has a unique numeric identifier of “PolyID”. Additional attributes are as follows:FIRE_ID: For those fires with an ID, the ID assigned by the reporting agency of the MTBS project.FIRENAME: Names of those fires which are named. This is uncommon in Canada.YEAR: The year the fire...

Seasonal change is important to consider when managing conservation areas at landscape-scales. The study of such patterns throughout the year is referred to as phenology. Recurring life-cycle events that are initiated and driven by environmental factors include animal migration and plant flowering. Phenological events, such as fall color change in deciduous forests, the first flowering in spring, and for those with allergies, the start of the pollen season, capture public attention. These events can impact our daily lives, provide clues to help understand and manage ecosystems, and provide evidence of how climate variability can impact the natural cycle of plants and animals. Phenological observations can be gathered...
