Estimates of various low-flow statistics were computed at 61 ungaged stream locations throughout New Jersey during the 2016 water year using methods in the report, Streamflow Characteristics and Trends in New Jersey, Water Years 1897-2003 (U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2005-5105). The estimates are computed as needed for use in water resources permitting, assessment, and management by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The data release includes the stream name, location, method, and intended use of the low-flow statistics computed during the 2016 water year. The data are provided as both a plain text file and an ArcGIS shapfile format.
Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at North Root National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northeast Montana using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2017. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 9 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately 1 square-kilometer. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts, lag corrected for apparent offsets between recorded GPS location and data locations for each coil pair, and averaged to a sounding distance of 1m along the survey...

One of the largest hydraulic mines (1.6 km2) is located in California’s Sierra Nevada within the Humbug Creek watershed and Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park (MDSHP). MDSHP’s denuded and dissected landscape is composed of weathered Eocene auriferous sediments susceptible to chronic rill and gully erosion whereas block failures and debris flows occur in more cohesive terrain. This data release includes a 2014 digital elevation model (DEM), a study area boundary, and a geomorphic map. The 2014 DEM was derived from an available aerial LiDAR dataset collected in 2014 by the California Department of Conservation. The geomorphic map was derived for the study area from using a multi-scale spatial analysis. A topographic...

This data set consists of the results of the statistical analysis (Asquith and others, 2020) of the remaining 10,295 water level records that met specific criteria to ensure that the water level records were representative of true groundwater conditions in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. The data are provided in a CSV file named StatisticalAnalysis.csv, and in the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefile format consisting of a group of files that have been compressed into a zip archive named StatisticalAnalysis.zip.

wy_lvl7_coarsescale: Wyoming hierarchical cluster level 7 (coarse-scale) for Greater sage-grouse We developed a hierarchical clustering approach that identifies biologically relevant landscape units that can 1) be used as a long-term population monitoring framework, 2) be repeated across the Greater sage-grouse range, 3) be used to track the outcomes of local and regional populations by comparing population changes across scales, and 4) be used to inform where to best spatially target studies that identify the processes and mechanisms causing population trends to change among spatial scales. The spatial variability in the amount and quality of habitat resources can affect local population success and result in different...

Data on 17 metrics of shale gas development in the Pennsylvania portion of the Upper Susquehanna River basin that was collated from a variety of sources and summarized at the upstream catchment scale. Data were also standardized by upstream area and transformed into rank scores based on metric distribution and then summarized into a Disturbance Intensity Index (DII). See Maloney et al. 2018 for detailed descriptions of each data sets and limitations of data. (Maloney, K. O., J. A. Young, S. P. Faulkner, A. Hailegiorgis, E. T. Slonecker, and L. E. Milheim. 2018. Semi-Permeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) were deployed for approximately 2 weeks at Palmyra Atoll during October and November, 2008. SPMDs passively accumulate organic compounds from the aquatic enviroment, and are then analyzed for various organic compounds. The deployment date, reasons for selecting the particular site, and photograph numbers as links are indicated.

The estimates are computed as needed for use in water resources permitting, assessment, and management by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The data release includes the stream name,...

Shallow subsurface electrical conductivity was mapped at Beaver Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northwest North Dakota using the DUALEM421 electromagnetic sensor (Dualem, Inc., ON, Canada) in the winter of 2018. Data were acquired by towing the DUALEM421 sensor on a sled behind an all-terrain vehicle or snow machine, with the sensor at a nominal height of 0.3 meters (m) above ground surface. Approximately 127 line-kilometers (km) of data were acquired over an area of approximately 8 square-kilometers. At this survey location, the 4m transmitter-receiver horizontal co-planar and perpendicular coil orientations did not function due to equipment malfunction. Data were manually edited to remove sensor dropouts,...

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Grand River Dam Authority completed a high-resolution multibeam bathymetric survey to compute a new capacity and surface-area table. The capacity and surface-area tables describe the relation between the elevation of the water surface and the volume of water that can be impounded at each given water-surface elevation. The capacity and surface area of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees were computed from a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN) surface created in Global Mapper Version 21.0.1. The TIN surface was created from three datasets: (1) a multibeam bathymetric survey of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in 2019 (Hunter and others 2020), (2) a 2017 USGS bathymetric survey...

To support research on remote sensing of rivers, specifically estimation of water depth from passive optical image data, hyperspectral image data and supporting depth measurements were collected on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 27, 2017. This data release provides access to hyperspectral image acquired through this project and the supporting field-based measurements of depth and water column optical properties are available through related data releases. The hyperspectral image data were acquired by Quantum Spatial Inc. (QSI) using the ITRES CASI 1500H imaging system deployed from a Cessna Caravan manned aircraft from a flying height of 1000 m above ground level. Initial geometric and radiometric...

This data set includes geospatial data and tables providing location, environmental, and vegetation data collected in 2017 and 2018 at the Little Saint Francis River chat pile restoration site, Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri. Restoration actions are being implemeneted as part of the settlement for the Madison County Mines Superfund site to compensate the public for losses of natural resources and the services they provide as part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District case. Data were collected prior to and during the early stages of restoration actions to restore bottomland forest habitat, reduce invasive plant species abundance, and improve upland...

Areas of groundwater discharge are hydrologically and ecologically important, and yet are difficult to predict at the river network scale. Thermal infrared imagery can be used to identify areas of groundwater discharge based on an observed temperature anomaly (colder during the late summer or warmer during the late winter). The thermal images, direct temperature measurements (11 cm depth) and discharge zone (seep) location information in this data release were collected as part of a study to evaluate and improve predicted spatial patterns of groundwater discharge. The data were collected during the late summer / early fall of 2017 along selected river reaches in the Farmington River watershed (Connecticut and Massachusetts)....

To determine if invasive annual grasses increased around energy developments after the construction phase, we calculated an invasives index using Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery for a 34-year time period (1985-2018) and assessed trends for 1,755 wind turbines (from the U.S. Wind Turbine Database) installed between 1988 and 2013 in the southern California desert. The index uses the maximum normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for early season greenness (January-June), and mean NDVI (July-October) for the later dry season. We estimated the relative cover of invasive annuals each year at turbine locations and control sites and tested for changes before and after each turbine was installed. These data were used...
