This dataset is a digital elevation model (DEM) of the beach topography of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The DEM has a 1-meter (m; 3.28084 foot [ft]) cell size and was created from a LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing large point clouds) dataset of terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data with an average point spacing of 0.137 m (0.45 ft). LiDAR data were collected August 10, 2019 using a boat-mounted Optech ILRIS scanner and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). References: Huizinga, R.J. and Wagner, D.M., 2019, Erosion monitoring along selected bank locations of the Coosa River in Alabama using terrestrial light detection and ranging...

(Panorama with photograph 175, jwh00175) Henrys Lake, a shallow body of water, about 3 by 2 miles in diameter, and full of small, scattered islands, and the source of Henrys Fork. It is well stocked with most excellent trout. At this point are four remarkable passes through the range, Tyghee and Red Rock, on the east and west; Raynolds, or the Madison, on the north; and Henrys Lake, on the south. Elevation of lake, 6,492 feet; Tyghee Pass, 7,063 feet; Red Rock Pass, 7,271 feet; Raynolds, 7,911 feet. The view is taken from the north, looking south, over Sawtell's ranch. This portion of the USGS data release presents bathymetry data collected during surveys performed in the Columbia River littoral cell, Washington and Oregon in 2014 (USGS Field Activity Number 2014-631-FA). Bathymetry data were collected using four personal watercraft (PWCs) equipped with single-beam sonar systems and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. The sonar systems consisted of an Odom Echotrac CV-100 single-beam echosounder and 200 kHz transducer with a 9 degree beam angle. Raw acoustic backscatter returns were digitized by the echosounder with a vertical resolution of 1.25 cm. Depths from the echosounders were computed using sound velocity profiles measured using a YSI CastAway CTD during...

Album caption and index card: Gibbon Falls on Gibbon River. The river tumbles over a scarp etched in the Yellowstone Tuff. The scarp first formed along faults at the north edge of the Yellwostone caldera 600,000 years ago, at a point that now lies 1/4 to 1/2 mile downstream. Continued erosion has caused the falls to recede northward to their present position. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. 1970. Published as Figure 40-C in U.S. Geological Survey. Bulletin 1347. 1971.

Album caption unavailable. See descriptive catalogue information below. Descriptive Catalog of the Photographs of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, W. H. Jackson, Photographer, Second Edition, Illustrated, 1871 Series, page 28, No. 262: The Grotto Spring. About two miles above the Crater Hills, on the west side of the Yellowstone. A column of steam issuing from a cave on the side of the hill, with an opening of about five feet in diameter, readily locates its position. The roaring of the waters in the cave, and the noise of the waves as they surge up to the mouth of the opening, are like that of the billows lashing the sea-shores. The water is as clear as crystal, and the steam from it is...
