This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

Global climate change is leading to large-scale shifts in species’ range limits. For example, rising winter temperatures are shifting the abundance and distributions of tropical, cold sensitive plant species towards higher latitudes. Coastal wetlands provide a prime example of such shifts, with tropical mangrove forests expanding into temperate salt marshes as winter warming alleviates past geographic limits set by cold intolerance. These rapid changes are dynamic and challenging to monitor, and uncertainty remains regarding the extent of mangrove expansion near poleward range limits. Here, we synthesized existing datasets and expert knowledge to assess the current (i.e., 2021) distribution of mangroves near dynamic...

Beschta and Ripple (2012) assert that increased elk populations in the Olympic National Park due to extirpation of wolves in the 1920’s has led to a reduction in riparian vegetation. They hypothesize that a decrease in this vegetation has led to an increase in erosion and undercutting of large conifer trees along the river banks, causing woody debris in the river, which in turn impacts channel morphology. Using imagery dating from 1939 and a set of digitized channel margins for each year, we classified vegetation changes that have occurred along the Hoh, Queets, and Quinault Rivers. We focused on identifying large conifers near the river that could impact water flow and channel morphology if undercut and classified...

This data set defines boundaries of oil and gas project areas, greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) core areas, and non-core and non-project areas within the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI; southwestern Wyoming). Specifically , the data represents results from the manuscript “Combined influences of future oil and gas development and climate on potential Sage-grouse declines and redistribution” for medium oil and gas development, high population size, and no climate component. The oil and gas development scenario were based on an energy footprint model that simulates well, pad, and road patterns for oil and gas recovery options that vary in well types (vertical and directional) and number...

The GIS shapefile Range extent of southern sea otters 2019.shp is a simple polyline representing the geographic distribution of the southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) in mainland California, based on data collected during the spring 2019 range-wide census. The USGS range-wide sea otter census has been undertaken each year since 1982, using consistent methodology involving both ground-based and aerial-based counts. The spring provides the primary basis for gauging population trends by State and Federal management agencies. Sea otter distribution in California (the mainland range) is considered to comprise a band of potential habitat stretching along the coast of California, and bounded to the north and south...

This data release combines seven airborne thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data sets of stream temperature collected along the mainstem of the Middle Fork John Day River (MFJD) in Oregon from 1994 to 2003. Years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2002 have single datasets. Year 2003 has two data sets. Most of the TIR data covered the upstream half of the MFJD mainstem between river km 50 and 110, while the 2002 profile covers the lower half starting at the confluence of the MFJD with the North Fork John Day River through river kilometer 64. All TIR data sets were collected by helicopter in an upstream direction in August with the intent of capturing data at or near the maximum summer daily stream temperature. Ground-truthing...

The shapefiles depict the valley bottom areas over which HEC-RAS model results were summarized. Valley bottoms were manually delineated in ArcMap by visually interpreting LIDAR terrain models and aerial imagery. Substantial changes in elevation, curvature, and slope were interpreted within the context of their position within the study reach to be channel banks and valley walls. Such areas were excluded from the valley bottom delineation.
False positive occupancy analysis predictions with model uncertainty based on summertime data provided to support the status assessment (SSA) for Myotis septentrionalis (MYSE). The objectives outlined by the Fish and Wildlife Service’s SSA team were to estimate summertime distributions across the entire species range. Statistical analysis included five types of response data requested from the North American Bat Monitoring Program database (NABat): automatically identified stationary acoustic calls, manually vetted stationary acoustic calls, automatically identified mobile acoustic calls, manually vetted mobile acoustic calls, and capture records. Statistical analysis was for the summertime distribution modeling,...
This dataset contains cross-sectionally averaged flow metrics from measurements made with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) on the Missouri River near Wolf Point, MT during 2018 and 2019. Each data point represents a single-pass measurement with a boat-mounted ADCP driven from bank-to-bank along lateral transects spaced ~15 meters apart along a 33 kilometer reach. The measurements were collected as part of a bathymetric survey in which two USGS survey boats were each mounted with an ADCP and single beam echosounder that were deployed simultaneously. Cross-sectionally averaged flow metrics such as velocity, depth, and temperature along with the total measured discharge and starting coordinate of the measurement...

The spatial context of invasions is increasingly recognized as important for the success and efficiency of management actions. This information can be key for managing invasive grasses that threaten native ecosystems. We calculated landscape metrics and circuit-based centrality for invasive grasses using a source input raster of weighted-average annual herbaceous cover from 2016-2018 (Maestas et al. 2020, 30 meter resolution) in the Great Basin, USA. This shapefile data product includes the summarized landscape metrics and connectivity metrics for 15 kilometer grid cells (n = 2408) across the Great Basin, USA. Metrics for each grid cell include: mean patch area (area_mn), class area (ca), number of patches (np),...

This shapefile describes the outputs from the application of a decision support tool (Rohweder and others 2015) used to assist the Minnesota Valley Wetland Management District make thoughtful and strategic choices about where to spend its limited management resources. It incorporates landscape and management unit features to identify which Waterfowl Production Areas have the greatest biological potential with respect to priority resources and habitats. The district can use this information to prioritize and target management, which will help with development of annual habitat plans. This shapefile contains the relevant input criteria attributes used in the development of station objective models.

This dataset consists of seven geomorphic variables attributed to standard river mile address points at 0.1 mile (160 m) intervals between Fort Peck Dam and the headwaters of Lake Sakakawea. The data illustrate the geomorphic variation in this 300-km segment of the Upper Missouri River and are indicative of channel complexity, thought to be an important influence on dispersal and retention of larval sturgeon.

We developed a hierarchical clustering approach that identifies biologically relevant landscape units that can 1) be used as a long-term population monitoring framework, 2) be repeated across the Greater sage-grouse range, 3) be used to track the outcomes of local and regional populations by comparing population changes across scales, and 4) be used to inform where to best spatially target studies that identify the processes and mechanisms causing population trends to change among spatial scales. The spatial variability in the amount and quality of habitat resources can affect local population success and result in different population growth rates among smaller clusters. Equally so, the spatial structure and ecological...
