This dataset contains images obtained from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) flown in the Cape Cod National Seashore. The objective of the field work was to evaluate the quality and cost of mapping from UAS images. Low-altitude (approximately 120 meters above ground level) digital images were obtained from cameras in a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flown from the lawn adjacent to the Coast Guard Beach parking lot on 1 March, 2016. A process-based numerical model of the mouth of the Columbia River (MCR) and estuary, Oregon and Washington, was applied to simulate hydrodynamic conditions for the time period of the Office of Naval Research-funded River and Inlets Dynamics (RIVET II) experiment between May 9 and June 15, 2013. Surface sediment was sampled using a small ponar, or 'grab', sampler on May 9, 2013 from the F/V Cape Windy at three locations corresponding to sites where instrumented tripods were deployed. This dataset documents the locations of ground control points associated with images obtained from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) flown in the Cape Cod National Seashore. Most of the ground control points were temporary targets placed by the U.S. Geological Survey field crew, but four were man-made features already in place, and two were points selected a posteriori from preliminary orthophotomosaics. Photographs of the four in-place features are included in this dataset, as are images showing the location of the two a posteriori points at two zoom levels. This portion of the data release presents water column acoustic backscatter data collected in the mouth of the Columbia River, Oregon and Washington, in 2013. Shipboard surveys to measure the acoustic properties of the water column were performed between May 28, 2013 and June 2, 2013 (USGS Field Activity S-03-13-WO) using a Biosonics single beam echosounder. The transducer was pole-mounted to the side of the R/V Park Snavely at approximately 1 m below the water surface and measurements were recorded as the vessel navigated along several cross-channel transects within the MCR.
