This layer represents land cover classes mapped within the Modoc Wildlife Refuge. Mapping was completed using a combination of field data, object-based image analysis using Feature Analyst, and photo interpretation. Source data included 2005 CIR NAIP digital aerial photography, and Modoc National Wildlife Refuge data layers. Field data was collected by USFWS staff in May and June of 2007.

At the request of the North American Salmon Stronghold Partnership, the Wild Salmon Center has been working with scientists across the Northwest to identify a network of watersheds important to the long term survival of salmon and steelhead. The locations of approximately 23,000 current and historical U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages in the United States and Puerto Rico (with the exception of Alaska) have been snapped to the medium resolution National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The NHD contains geospatial information about mapped surface-water features, such as streams, lakes, and reservoirs, etc., creating a hydrologic network that can be used to determine what is upstream or downstream from a point of interest on the NHD network. This dataset was developed as part of the research for a Royal Roads University master's thesis entitled "Assessing the impact of human activities on British Columbia’s estuaries". The work was also published through PLOS One (Robb, 2014). The estuary polygons were created by the Pacific Estuary Conservation Program (PECP). Please see Ryder et al., 2007 for more information on their creation. This dataset includes a subset of the PECP estuary dataset because only those estuary polygons that could be linked to to a unique watershed were considered in the analysis.
