The data presented here contain quasi-event hydrologic response characteristics for quickflow response intervals (QRIs) calculated at 57 USGS GAGES-II reference watersheds in the western US. Each row in the attached csv contains characteristics for an individual QRI at one site. QRI characteristics include duration, antecedent flow, input, input rate, peak flow, potential evapotranspiration, quickflow, and quickflow/input (effectively a runoff ratio). This data release supports the publication "Sub-annual streamflow responses to rainfall and snowmelt inputs in snow-dominated watersheds of the western U.S." in Water Resources Research.

A digital map of the thickness of the surficial unconfined aquifer, including from the land surface and unsaturated zone to the bottom of sediments of geologic units identified as part of the surficial aquifer, was produced to improve understanding of the hydrologic system in the Maryland and Delaware portions of the Delmarva Peninsula. The map is intended to be used in conjunction with other environmental coverages (such land use, wetlands, and soil characteristics) to provide a subsurface hydrogeologic component to studies of nitrate transport that have historically relied on maps of surficial features. It could also be used to study the transport of other water soluble chemicals. The map was made using the...

This metadata record describes a series of data sets of natural and anthropogenic landscape features linked to NHDPlus Version 2.1’s (NHDPlusV2) approximately 2.7 million stream segments, their associated catchments, and their upstream watersheds within the conterminous United States. The data were linked to four spatial components of NHDPlusV2: individual reach catchments, riparian buffer zones around individual reaches, reach catchments accumulated downstream through the river network, and riparian buffer zones accumulated downstream through the river network. All data can be linked to NHDPlus using the COMID field in these tables and the ComID in the flowline shapefiles or FEATUREID in the catchment ones in the...

This dataset contains water-use estimates for 2015 that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS's) National Water Use Science Project is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Working in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies, the USGS has published an estimate of water use in the United States every 5 years, beginning in 1950. Water-use estimates aggregated to the State level are presented in USGS Circular 1441, "Estimated Use of Water in the United States in 2015" (Dieter and others, 2018). This dataset contains the county-level water-use data that support the state-level estimates in Dieter and others 2018. This...

This model archive documents the Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model used to simulate potential recharge for portions of Pennsylvania and Maryland from 2000 to 2021. The Pennsylvania and Maryland SWB model was used to create output at a 250 meter grid scale. Model parameters were adjusted using baseflow estimates from 36 reference watersheds varying in area from 0.37 to 817 square miles. The simulations were used to create 21-year grids of annual potential recharge and evapotranspiration, and the sensitivity of the model to parameter adjustments. The model archive includes all the files used in the sensitivity model runs, which are described in the accompanying Scientific Investigations Report 2022-5054. The directory...

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides funding and technical assistance for the implementation of practices that enable people to conserve, maintain, or improve soil, water, and related natural resources. NRCS conservation practices, or best management practices, relate the conservation practices to conservation practice physical effects (CPPE). Physical effects are listed in the data and purpose and include effects such as nutrients and pesticides transported to surface and/or groundwater. The CPPE is published in the NRCS Field Office Technical Guide and is listed in the sources section. NRCS's CPPE includes a limited set of practices. All practices that do not...

Snow persistence (SP) or the snow cover index (SCI), is the fraction of time that snow is present on the ground for a defined period. Cloud covered index (CCI) is the fraction of time that there is no data, cloud, or sensor saturation for the same period. SP and CCI were calculated on a pixel by pixel basis using MODIS/Terra Snow Cover 8-Day L3 Global 500m Grid, Collection 6 obtained from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). January 1 – July 3 SP was calculated for each year as the fraction of 8-day MODIS images with snow present. The selected period brackets the temporal extent of peak snow accumulation to complete snow ablation in most parts of the western United States. The July 3 date is used because...

This metadata record documents a rudimentary estimate of nitrogen from septic for the conterminous United States for 2010, derived from block-group 1990 and 2010 Decennial Census of Population and Housing data. Specifically, the data were computed from 1990 population and housing data where a ratio of the total population to the people on septic was obtained and applied to 2010 population data by block group. All input data were acquired from the National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS, Manson and others, 2017). The amount of nitrogen in pounds per person per year was derived from documentation supporting the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Phase 5.3 Community Watershed Model (USEPA, 2010). The Supplemental...
