Mercury (Hg) is a persistent environmental contaminant and can accumulate and concentrate in food webs as methylmercury (MeHg), presenting a health risk to humans and wildlife. Multiyear monitoring and modeling studies have shown that atmospheric Hg in litterfall is an important form of Hg deposition to forests. Litterfall consists primarily of leaves with some amounts of twigs, bark, flowers, seeds, fruits, and nuts. Atmospheric Hg accumulates in the forest canopy material and transfers to the forest floor in litterfall. This data set is derived from monthly litterfall collected at the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) Mercury Deposition Network (MDN) site at El Verde, Puerto Rico, identification number...

This data release presents results of chemical analyses of groundwater sampled during summer and autumn of 2019 and spring of 2020 from 23 wells in the Great Miami buried-valley aquifer (GM-BVA) of southwestern Ohio. Groundwater and quality-control samples were analyzed to determine concentrations of selected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Groundwater and related quality-control samples were collected from 22 of 23 wells and analyzed for 24 different PFAS by two different laboratories that used slightly different proprietary isotope-dilution based adaptations of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method 537.1, referred to as method 1 and method 2. Results from PFAS analysis of groundwater...
These data are depth-averaged velocities measured by an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), as well as continuous depth-averaged velocities from a stationary location measured with an acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM). These data were collected from the July 12-14, 2022, survey of the Ashtabula River near Ashtabula, Ohio. The location of the ADCP data are from approximately 1,500 feet upstream from the Bridge Street bridge to 3,000 feet upstream from the Bridge Street bridge. The ADVM data are from approximately 41° 53' 46.4"N, 80° 47' 39.5"W. ADCP data were collected using an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna with submeter accuracy. The ADCP and GNSS antenna were mounted...

Jointly managed by multiple states and the federal government, there are many ongoing efforts to characterize and understand water quality in the Delaware River Basin (DRB). Many State, Federal and non-profit organizations have collected surface-water-quality samples across the DRB for decades and many of these data are available through the National Water Quality Monitoring Council's Water Quality Portal (WQP). For this data release, WQP data in the DRB were harmonized, meaning that they were processed to create a clean and readily usable dataset. The harmonization process included the synthesis of parameter names and fractions, the condensation of remarks and other data qualifiers, the resolution of duplicate...

Phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended-sediment loads, in 24 U.S. tributaries of the Great Lakes, were calculated using U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring program for the period Oct 2010 through Sept 2020 (USGS water years 2011–2020). Total phosphorus, orthophosphate, particulate phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, ammonium plus ammonia, and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment exported downstream at each tributary site....

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—Louisville District conducted a pilot study on the use of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for a survey of water conditions during August 2016 in a portion of Nolin River Lake, Kentucky. The AUV was equipped with sensors for the continuous collection of water-quality measurements for dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, temperature, turbidity, total chlorophyll, and blue-green algae concentrations. The AUV continuously collected measurements of these water-quality parameters while traveling at varied depths in a set spatial pattern within a portion of the lake. In addition to the AUV survey, discrete nutrient- and...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, collected data in 2017 to study the sources and occurrences of continual detections of high Escherichia coli (E. coli) detections at urban beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline in northwest Indiana and northeastern Illinois. High E. coli detections cause the beaches to be closed for recreational use until additional samples verify that E. coli levels have fallen below the threshold of 235 counts per 100 ml. The project used microbial source tracking (MST) and metagenomics analyses to evaluate the sources of E. coli. This data release provides the phytoplankton, mictobial source tracking, and metagenomics components...
Context: The freshwater resources of the Central Appalachian region are impacted by stressors operating on multiple spatial scales, from local land use and land management (e.g., timber harvests and surface mining) to regional air quality patterns (e.g., pollutant emissions) and broader-scale climate variability. In order to isolate the effects of any of these stressors on water resources, detailed long-term datasets are crucial. The environmental monitoring network at University of Kentucky’s (U KY) Robinson Forest in eastern Kentucky provides such a resource, with detailed streamflow, water-quality, and precipitation-chemistry data for multiple control and disturbed watersheds covering a 40-year time period. ...

These orthophotos and digital surface models (DSMs) were derived from low-altitude (approximately 92-m above ground surface) images collected from unmanned aerial system (UAS) flights over edge-of-field sites that are part of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring. The objective of this UAS photogrammetry data collection was to provide information on the tile-drain network in individual fields with the goal of understanding already observed patterns in runoff amount and water quality from these sites. A 3DR Solo quadcopter served as the flight vehicle, flights were pre-planned using Mission Planner, and flights were flown using Tower. Geospatial data were originally in...

The primary data sets consist of continuous water-quality data (temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrate plus nitrite, and streamflow) from in-situ equipment, and discrete water-quality samples (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended sediment concentration, and suspended sediment sieve diameter) collected during site visits at the USGS streamgage School Branch at CR750N at Brownsburg, Indiana, November 17, 2015 to February 6, 2019. The continuous and discrete measurements were used to develop regression models which may be used to compute concentrations and loads of suspended sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. The secondary data sets consist of daily streamflow,...

During 2013-2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, collected water samples year-round from the National Water Quality Network – Rivers and Streams (NWQN) and reported on 221 pesticides at 72 sites across the US in agricultural, developed, and mixed land use watersheds. Pesticide Toxicity Index (PTI) scores, a screening-level tool that uses an additive, toxic-unit model, were calculated to estimate the potential chronic and acute toxicity to 3 taxonomic groups – fish, cladocerans, and benthic invertebrates. The pesticide that makes the single largest (maximum) contribution to the PTI is called TUmax. This dataset consists of the PTI and TUmax scores, as well as, the TUmax...

An investigation was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs that found 1,132 transportation and utility assets in Indiana are vulnerable to fluvial erosion hazards due to close proximity to actively migrating streams. Locations of transportation assets (bridges, roadways, and railroad lines) and selected utility assets (high-capacity overhead power-transmission lines, underground pipelines, water treatment facilities, and in-channel dams) were determined using aerial imagery hosted by the Google Earth platform. Identified assets were aggregated by stream reach, county, and class. The contents of this data release include (1) a comma-delimited...

A rain garden and other stormwater control measures (SCM) were installed at Gary City Hall in Gary, Indiana to retain water, increase infiltration, and divert stormwater from city sewers. In order to investigate the impacts of the installed SCMs, hydrologic data were collected prior to and following the installation to estimate site water budgets (Lampe and others, 2022). The Episodic Master Recession (EMR) method was used to estimate recharge rates at five different locations for inclusion in the site water budgets (Heppner and Nimmo, 2005; Nimmo and others, 2015). Input data for the EMR software package were collected from a rain gage and five monitoring wells with installed pressure transducers at different locations...
