DETERMINING ADULT PACIFIC LAMPREY ABUNDANCE AND SPAWNING HABITAT IN THE LOWER DESCHUTES RIVER SUB-BASIN, OREGON

An adult Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata) escapement estimate was generated in the lower Deschutes River during run year 2008. This included a mark-recapture study to determine adult abundance and a tribal subsistence creel. Fish measuring less than 10.5 cm received two marks for the mark-recapture estimate while those measuring greater than 10.5 cm were surgically implanted with radio transmitters to monitor migration upstream of Sherars Falls (rkm 70.4). Pacific lamprey Lampetra tridentata is a native Snake River subbasin anadromous fish species occupying a unique ecological niche. Recent decline of Pacific lamprey adult migrants to the Snake River subbasin has contributed to focused attention on the species. Pacific lamprey adults counted passing Ice Harbor Dam fishway (first hydroelectric facility on Snake River) averaged 18,000 during 1962-1969 and about 600 during 1993-2006. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This document is the 1998 annual progress report for studies of Pacific lampreys (Lampetra tridentata) conducted by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and University of Minnesota (U of M). Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) funded activities through Project 94-026. DETERMINING LAMPREY SPECIES COMPOSITION, LARVAL DISTRIBUTION AND ADULT ABUNDANCE IN THE DESCHUTES RIVER SUBBASIN, OREGON

We will report results of an ongoing project in the Deschutes River Subbasin to describe Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata) life history. Project objectives were to determine adult lamprey escapement from Sherars Falls located at Rkm 70.4 and determine lamprey focal spawning areas, spawn timing and habitat through radio telemetry. A mark-recapture study and tribal creel was conducted to determine adult escapement. Lamprey were radio tagged and are currently being mobile, aerial and fixed site tracked to describe spawning. AERIAL TRACKING OF PACIFIC LAMPREY IN THE WILLAMETTE RIVER BASIN, OREGON

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Little is known about the freshwater migration of adult Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata) in the Willamette Basin. During 2005 we conducted 15 aerial radiotracking surveys to gain information on the movements, distribution, and habitat use of adult Pacific lamprey in the Willamette Basin. All fish were collected and tagged (N = 136) at Willamette Falls Dam as part of a USGS study that examined passage rates and behavior of Pacific lamprey (see Magie et al. 2006). Aerial tracking was conducted between June and December, with emphasis in the Willamette Basin above Willamette Falls.
