The Neversweat Prospect (MMK-092) is located on the right bank of Eldorado Creek, a tributary of Moose Creek. The site is a landscape of the Kantishna Historic Mining District (KHMD). The KHMD is within the boundaries of Denali National Park and Preserve, at the end of the 92 mile Park Road near Wonder Lake. The Neversweat Prospect is a 4.3 acre historic site and contains a small collection of historic buildings and structures, small scale features and landscape features associated with lode mining. The extant features consist of one building (cabin), and 15 structures (three collapsed adits, one partially collapsed adit, one partially collapsed outhouse, a historic road, a historic trail, six rock retaining walls)....

Ongoing and rapid environmental change within western and northern Canada is of major societal and scientific concern and has local- to global-scale implications. There is an urgent need to understand the changes and develop improved diagnostic and predictive modeling tools to manage uncertain futures.

The 2002 Mw 7.9 Denali Fault earthquake, Alaska, provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate in quantitative detail the regional hillslope mass-wasting response to strong seismic shaking in glacierized terrain. We present the first detailed inventory of ∼1580 coseismic slope failures, out of which some 20% occurred above large valley glaciers, based on mapping from multi-temporal remote sensing data. We find that the Denali earthquake produced at least one order of magnitude fewer landslides in a much narrower corridor along the fault ruptures than empirical predictions for an M ∼8 earthquake would suggest, despite the availability of sufficiently steep and dissected mountainous topography prone to frequent...

This thesis investigates snow-pack development and frost penetration in the Blackstone Uplands, Y.T. The purpose is to assess the use of an accessible reference site as an index of these conditions throughout the area. The project responds to local interest in improving management of snowmobile access to the region. Sixteen transects were monitored for snow depth in fall and winter 2006-07. Active-layer temperature was monitored by data logger during freeze-up. Below-normal snowfall permitted examination of snow-pack development with marginal conditions for snowmobile traffic. Prior to snow redistribution by wind, snow depth was controlled by elevation and the reference site had more snow than all valley-bottom...

We compared 7 years of local automated weather station (AWS) data to NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data to characterize the modern environment of Lake El'gygytgyn, in Chukotka Russia. We then used this comparison to estimate the air temperatures required to initiate and maintain multi-year lake-ice covers to aid in paleoclimate reconstructions of the 3.6 M years sediment record recovered from there. We present and describe data from our AWS from 2002–2008, which recorded air temperatures, relative humidity, precipitation, barometric pressure, and wind speed/direction, as well as subsurface soil moisture and temperature. Measured mean annual air temperature (MAAT) over this period was −10.4 °C with a slight warming trend...
