Here we present the map of potential suitable habitat for Barstow woolly sunflower (Eriophyllum mohavense). The data indicate both how many models predicted each location to be potentially suitable for the species and the average standardized habitat suitability score for each location.Data are presented at a spatial resolution of 10 m pixels, which was required to harmonize the original model inputs. However, maps of suitable habitat should be used at a resolution no smaller than 360 m (i.e., 36 pixels x 36 pixels), which corresponds with the resolution of the coarsest model input. These data are intended to be used only to target future plant surveys in areas where new occurrences are most likely to benefit future...

We developed a hierarchical clustering approach that identifies biologically relevant landscape units that can 1) be used as a long-term population monitoring framework, 2) be repeated across the Greater sage-grouse range, 3) be used to track the outcomes of local and regional populations by comparing population changes across scales, and 4) be used to inform where to best spatially target studies that identify the processes and mechanisms causing population trends to change among spatial scales. The spatial variability in the amount and quality of habitat resources can affect local population success and result in different population growth rates among smaller clusters. Equally so, the spatial structure and ecological...

This data collection is associated with the project: “Status and Trends of Deciduous Communities in the Bighorn Mountains”. It contains the project study area, model evaluation data, model input data, and model output data in the form of probability of occurrence rasters for deciduous and coniferous species, as well as a synthesis map. The aim of the study is to assess the current trends of deciduous communities in the Bighorn National Forest in north-central Wyoming. The data here represents phase I of the project, completed in FY2017. The USGS created a synthesis map of coniferous and deciduous communities in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming using a species distribution modeling approach developed in the Wyoming...

This sampling frame is a set of grid-based finite-area frames spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The grid for the United States is broken into individual grids for the continental United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Alaska is combined with Canada into a single grid. Each country/state/territory extent consists of four nested sampling grids at 50x50km, 10x10km, 5x5km, and 1x1km resolutions. The original 10x10km continental United States grid was developed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in the interagency “Bat Grid” monitoring program in the Pacific Northwest and was expanded across Canada, the United States, and Mexico for the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)....

Here we present the multispecies map of probable suitable habitat in the project area. The multispecies map of probable suitable habitat combines data from all 26 species for which probable suitable habitat was mapped and indicates the number of species for which probable suitable habitat is predicted at each location. Data are presented at a spatial resolution of 10 m pixels, which was required to harmonize the original model inputs. However, maps of suitable habitat should be used at a resolution no smaller than 360 m (i.e., 36 pixels x 36 pixels), which corresponds with the resolution of the coarsest model input. This product can be used to inform future conservation, planning, and management actions in the California...
Data were collected to investigate effects of deltamethrin and fipronil on ectoparasites from black-tailed prairie dogs in South Dakota, USA. In late-July 2018, we treated 3 sites with 0.05% deltamethrin dust and 5 sites with host-fed 0.005% fipronil grain. Three non-treated sites functioned as experimental baselines. We collected ectoparasites before treatments (June-July 2018) and after treatments (August-October 2018, June-July 2019). We combed ectoparasites from live-trapped, anesthetized prairie dogs. Trapping on treated and non-treated sites occurred simultaneously or nearly simultaneously in each year. Detected ectoparasites were counted and placed back on the prairie dogs from which they were collected to...

This data set defines boundaries of oil and gas project areas, greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) core areas, and non-core and non-project areas within the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI; southwestern Wyoming). Specifically, the data represents results from the manuscript “Combined influences of future oil and gas development and climate on potential Sage-grouse declines and redistribution” for high oil and gas development, low population size, and no climate component. The oil and gas development scenario were based on an energy footprint model that simulates well, pad, and road patterns for oil and gas recovery options that vary in well types (vertical and directional) and number...

We studied the effect of castrating a proportion of the adult males in a feral horse herd to examine any effect on behavior and social associations, particularly in terms of association with mares (i.e., maintenance of a harem group). We conducted this study between 2017 and 2020 at two Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in western Utah, USA: Conger and Frisco. We conducted demographic observations year round at both HMAs to record group composition and foaling rate. We additionally recorded behavioral observations at Conger HMA.

We collected fleas from colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs in Badlands National Park, South Dakota, 2020-2021. Specifically, we tested fipronil grain for flea control on two colonies: Colony A in 2020 and Colony B in 2021. To assess on-host flea numbers (in 2020 and 2021), we anesthetized trapped prairie dogs (and their fleas) with isoflurane in induction chambers for processing. We combed each individual with a fine-tooth comb for 30 seconds to remove and count fleas. We released all animals, after they were recovered from anesthesia, at the location where they were captured. To assess off-host flea numbers (in 2021), we used a plumber’s cable to insert a 20- by 20-centimeter flannel-cloth as deep as possible...

The dataset is comprised of historical observations and predictions of winter colony counts at known sites for three bat species (little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus; tricolored bat, Perimyotis subflavus; and big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus). The dataset consists of two separate but related data files in tabular format (comma-separated values [.csv]). Each data set consists of predicted winter counts derived using winter status and trends modeling methods developed by the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat). These two predicted winter count data sets were used to inform NABat summertime status and trends analysis: 1) modeled abundance predictions for all hibernacula for all three species from 2010-2021,...

We live-trapped black-tailed prairie dogs on Buffalo Gap National Grassland, South Dakota, 2020-2021. We anesthetized trapped animals (and their fleas) with isoflurane in induction chambers for processing. We combed each individual with a fine-tooth comb for 30 seconds to remove and count fleas. The total flea count from an individual prairie dog was considered an index of flea abundance. We released all animals, after they were recovered from anesthesia, at the location where they were captured. Data were collected on sites treated with fipronil "FipBit" bait pellets for systemic flea control with prairie dogs. Sites were treated with FipBits containing 0.68, 0.71, or 0.83 milligrams of fipronil per FipBit. The...

Removal of two large dams from the Elwha River, Washington USA, in 2011-2014 released ~20.5 metric tons (Mt) of impounded sediment, ~5.4 Mt of which was deposited in the river delta and estuary. This dataset presents measurements of geomorphic surfaces, vegetation colonization, and plant community development in the Elwha River delta and estuary after dam removal. Geomorphic surfaces and vegetation colonization were estimated from aerial imagery of the delta and estuary in 2016 and 2018. Plant community development was quantified from field plot surveys of pioneer plant communities on new surfaces in 2014 and 2018 and of established delta and estuarine plant communities on older surfaces in 2007, 2014, and 2018....

Informed wildlife management requires robust information regarding population status, habitat requirements, and likely responses to changing resource conditions. Growing evidence indicates single species management may inadequately conserve communities and result in undesired effects to non-target species. Thus, management can benefit from habitat relationship information for multiple species within, and across, ecosystems. Using 13 years of point count data (2008-2020) collected across the western United States and a suite of relevant covariates for habitat, we fit hierarchical models to characterize and predict songbird densities and evaluate population trends for 11 species of interest: Bewick’s Wren (Thryomanes...
