These data were compiled to support effective conservation for species within Astragalus sect. Humillimi. Two species, A. cremnophylax var. cremnophylax and A. humillimus are federally listed as endangered taxa. The data provided herein were used to resolve the relationaships among taxa, the population structure within taxa, and genetic diversity within taxa. The data are provided in a STRUCTURE-formatted file that includes taxa, individuals, sampling localities, and the genotype scores per individual for 690 Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs).
These data were collected to examine water mixing in the lower Maumee River to determine the extent to which water from Lake Erie backflows into the river, and under what conditions this occurs. We used a combination of fixed hydrologic gauges; water chemistry including stable isotopes and conservative tracers; and direct physical measurements to estimate the percentages of lake and river water at both fixed sites and transects. Those results were compared with concurrent flows and estimates of seiche activity. Data suggest that during 2013 mixing did occur, but was confined to the lowest river reach within the city limits of Toledo, Ohio. This tabular data set could be used for any questions involving large river...

In February 2017, a population of California red-legged frog Rana draytonii was discovered in the southern foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains of Riverside County, California, near the edge of the species’ historic distribution. A few days after the first sightings of R. draytonii at the Whitewater Preserve, we conducted a visual daytime search for frogs, tadpoles and egg masses followed by a nighttime eye shine search for adult frogs. The captured frog weighed, measured (snout-to-urostyle [SU]), sampled for tissue and georeferenced using a GPS unit. Survey work was authorized by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Permit and a California Department of Fish and Wildlife Scientific Collecting Permit....

This shapefile represents proposed management categories (Core, Priority, General, and Non-Habitat) derived from the intersection of habitat suitability categories and lek space use. Habitat suitability categories were derived from a composite, continuous surface of sage-grouse habitat suitability index (HSI) values for northeastern California formed from the multiplicative product of the spring (mid-March to June), summer (July to mid-Octoer), and winter (November to March) HSI surfaces.

These products were developed to provide scientific and correspondingly spatially explicit information regarding the distribution and abundance of conifers (namely, singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla), Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma), and western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis)) in Nevada and portions of northeastern California. Encroachment of these trees into sagebrush ecosystems of the Great Basin can present a threat to populations of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). These data provide land managers and other interested parties with a high-resolution representation of conifers within the geographic range of the Bi-State Distinct Population Segment of greater sage-grouse that can be used...

This dataset includes anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) screening results of 40 Barred Owls (Strix varia) collected in forested landscapes of Washington and Oregon from 2015-2017. Liver tissue was collected from each owl and screened for exposure to eight AR compounds, including 4 first-generation ARs (warfarin, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and coumachlor), and 4 second-generation ARs (brodifacoum, bromadionlone, difethialone, and difenacoum). Additionally, this dataset includes geographic, temporal, environmental, and biological attributes of individual owls that were identified as potential sources of variation in AR exposure and/or useful measurements for assessing AR exposure risk of sympatric northern spotted...
These are terrestrial laser scanner datasets collected in forested areas west of Flagstaff, Arizona in 2015 and 2016. For each of the two scanners, six treatment areas were scanned, with four of them overlapping one another (Figure 1). These data are composed of individual scans referenced to one another using reflective targets, and geolocated using differentially corrected GPS and RTK locations of scan locations (Figure 3). There were overall large differences in point density among the two scanners (Figure 2).
This data bundle contains the merged data sets to create models for bishop's goutweed and fountaingrass using the VisTrails:SAHM [SAHM 2.1.0]. We developed species distribution models for both species following a workflow designed to balance automation and human intervention to produce models for invasive plant species of concern to U.S. land managers. Location data came from existing databases aggregating species occurrence information. Predictors came from a national library of potential environmental variables based on what environmental factors might limit plant species' distributions in different parts of the U.S. including climatic, topographic, soil, land use, and anthropogenic factors. The outputs of these...
Tributaries support spawning habitats for three of the four major sub-stocks of Lake Erie walleye (Sander vitreus). Despite a history of anthropogenic degradation and the extirpation of other potamodromous species, the Maumee River, OH continues to support one of the largest fish migrations in the Laurentian Great Lakes. To determine if spawning habitat availability and quality could limit production of Maumee River walleye, a habitat suitability model based on river bottom substrates and water depth was created for the lower 51 km of the Maumee River, and the distribution and relative abundance of walleye eggs deposited in a 25-km stretch of river were assessed. Walleye eggs were collected using a diaphragm pump...
This datasets summarizes small mammal trapping efforts that USGS San Francisco Bay Estuary Field Station has led, co-led, or supervised, to detect and monitor the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris) in the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay from 1998-2014. As the salt marsh harvest mouse is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, sensitive location information can be made available upon request by contacting the dataset point of contact. These data support the following publication: Marcot, B.G., Woo, I., Thorne, K.M., Freeman, C.M., and Guntenspergen, G.R., 2020. Habitat of the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris) in San Francisco Bay....

These data were compiled for a comprehensive review of pinyon-juniper communities including Pinus edulis, Pinus monophylla, Juniperus osteosperma, Juniperus monosperma, and Juniperus scopulorum. Compiled are a list of references cataloged by the topic of interest resulting from the literature search. The characterization for each reference includes the focal species, descriptions of the site(s) the study was conducted at, type of study, any land management treatments and the measured response variables. The location data for publications that provided location information have also been compiled in order to compare the geographic distribution of these studies with the distribution of the focal tree species.
From 2013-16 we deployed 3 motion-sensing cameras paired with hair (DNA)-snaring devices within each of 263 24-square kilometer primary sampling units distributed systematically across the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington. The data set contains detection histories of fishers during each of 3 14-day sampling intervals at each hexagon. The data set also includes detectability and environmental covariates measured at the detection stations and within a 1,262-m buffer inscribed around the detection stations in each hexagon. Reported covariates include the sampling year, Julian date of sampling visit, proportion of 14-day sampling intervals that bait was functional, landscape composition within buffer regions,...

A long-term, multiseason, fish egg sampling program is conducted annually on the Detroit, Saint Clair, and Saint Marys rivers to identify where productive fish spawning habitat currently exists. Egg mats were placed on the river bottom during the spring and fall at historic spawning areas, candidate fish spawning habitat restoration sites, and completed spawning habitat restoration sites throughout the rivers. Widespread evidence was found of lithophilic spawning by numerous native fish species, including walleye (Sander vitreus), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), suckers (Catostomidae spp.), and trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus). The data describe the number, density,...

To determine the differences in soil microbial community composition between native and non-native lineages of Phragmites, we sampled soils from eight sites in the Great Lakes basin where populations of native and non-native Phragmites co-occurred. In addition, we included samples of soils from 27 populations of Phragmites across the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts of the US. Samples were collected between July 2015 and September 2017. At each site in the Great Lakes, we sampled rhizosphere and bulk soil surrounding one ramet of each lineage. Samples from Atlantic and Gulf coasts were collected by homogenizing rhizosphere soils from multiple ramets of one population within a single lineage. DNA was extracted...
These data were acquired from 7 study sites distributed across the range of Gopherus agassizii. Data were collected from 1997 to 2002 as part of three separate studies, although data were not collected at all sites in each year. Radio-transmitters were attached to the carapace of 151 females and VHF radio-telemetry was used to relocate animals to assess reproductive status. Egg production was determined from X-radiographs taken weekly/biweekly intervals (depending on the study) using a portable X-ray machine between April and July or August of each year. In addition, the mean carapace length (MCL) of each tortoise was measured at each time of capture or recapture using calipers (mm). A nesting event was recorded...
