Longstanding taxonomic uncertainties have limited conservation efforts for species currently assigned to the freshwater mussel genus Alasmidonta. Here, we present mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data needed to assess the genus- and species-level taxonomy of Alasmidonta. These molecular data allowed us to test whether cryptic diversity exists within Alasmidonta and whether A. triangulata and A. arcula are distinct species. Details associated with specimens and DNA sequence data are provided here to provide a foundation for future research on Alasmidonta and give conservation agencies greater confidence in the findings of our work.

In recent decades the encroachment of woody mangrove species into herbaceous marshes has been documented along the U.S. northern Gulf of Mexico coast. These species shifts have been attributed primarily to rising sea levels and warming winter temperatures, but the role of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and water availability may become more prominent drivers of species interactions under future climate conditions. In this greenhouse study we examined the effects of CO2 concentration (ambient, elevated) and water regime (drought, saturated, flooded) on early growth of the mangrove species Avicennia germinans and Spartina alterniflora, a herbaceous grass.
This map was created to help assess impacts on nonindigenous aquatic species distributions due to flooding associated with Hurricane Maria. Storm surge and flood events can assist expansion and distribution of nonindigenous aquatic species through the connection of adjacent watersheds, backflow of water upstream of impoundments, increased downstream flow, and creation of freshwater bridges along coastal regions. This map will help natural resource managers determine potential new locations for individual species, or to develop a watch list of potential new species within a watershed. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release includes maps of Phragmites australis coverage within the Delta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), located on the eastern half of the Mississippi River Delta in south Louisiana, for 2011, 2013 and 2016. While the objective of this mapping effort was to map the presence of P. australis, the map also includes coverage of water and non-P.australis land areas (e.g., non-P. australis emergent marsh with scrub/shrub, developed, etc.) and water (e.g., open water, submerged aquatic vegetation, floating aquatic vegetation, and nonpersistent wetlands). Approximately 90% of pine rockland habitat in South Florida and the Florida Keys, USA, has been lost, fragmented, and degraded due to urbanization and other anthropogenic disturbances. These data represent several benthic cores collected near chemosynthetic seep habitats during 2009 and 2012. Sediment cores were collected near several natural hydrocarbon seeps with ROV deployed push cores. The purpose of these samples is to examine benthic communities associated with natural hydrocarbon seepage in the deep sea as well as compare these communities to areas associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil blowout. Samples were collected in the northern Gulf of Mexico, mostly south of Louisiana, and at depths ranging from 500 to 2600 meters. Sample processing and species identification occurred from 2014 – 2016. Macrofauna (>300 um) were identified to the lowest taxonomic unit.

Data to support the site characterization of locations sampled along the continental shelf and slope of the western U.S. coast off Washington, Oregon and California during the EXPRESS RL1905 expedition in 2019. Data consisted of tissue samples from fauna, sediments and particulate organic matter. These samples were analyzed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes to examine food web ecology. Additional observational data were collected through video analyses with efforts focused on documenting counts of fauna other than corals, sponges and fishes, as well as general habitat characteristics.
We generated multilocus DNA sequence data and traditional morphometric measurements to evaluate species boundaries in Fusconaia mitchelli. We sequenced three loci: the protein-coding mitochondrial DNA genes cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase 1, and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1. We also took three measurements, maximum length, maximum width, and maximum height, of mussel shells for morphometric analysis.
The endangered Cape Sable seaside sparrow (Ammospiza maritima mirabilis; CSSS) occurs in marl prairie habitat at the southern end of the Everglades, at the southernmost part of the Florida peninsula. The locations of three of its six subpopulations are proximate to the coast, putting them at risk for inundation caused by sea level rise (SLR). This dataset provides information on plant sexual reproduction of a clonally-spreading perennial species, Spartina alterniflora. We investigated flowering phenology, potential seed and seedling production, and flower damage in reference and restored sites in southeastern Louisiana. Additional covariates of elevation and soil parameters were used to investigate underlying mechanisms of differences.

Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) samples were collected from marshes on five different keys (Big Pine, Torch, Ramrod, Cudjoe, and Sugarloaf Keys) within National Key Deer Refuge in January and June of 2015 and analyzed for contamination by the mosquito control insecticide permethrin. Permethrin was detected on 17 of 57 samples collected in January while it was detected on 40 of 56 samples collected in June. The concentrations on samples collected in January (below detection to 16 ng/g ww) were lower than concentrations on samples collected in June (below detection to 57.7 ng/g).
