wy_lvl7_coarsescale: Wyoming hierarchical cluster level 7 (coarse-scale) for Greater sage-grouse We developed a hierarchical clustering approach that identifies biologically relevant landscape units that can 1) be used as a long-term population monitoring framework, 2) be repeated across the Greater sage-grouse range, 3) be used to track the outcomes of local and regional populations by comparing population changes across scales, and 4) be used to inform where to best spatially target studies that identify the processes and mechanisms causing population trends to change among spatial scales. The spatial variability in the amount and quality of habitat resources can affect local population success and result in different...

The 2018 Kīlauea eruption and caldera collapse generated intense cycles of seismicity tied to repeated large seismic (Mw ~5) collapse events associated with magma withdrawal from beneath the summit. To gain insight into the underlying dynamics and aid eruption response, we applied waveform-based earthquake detection and double-difference location as the eruption unfolded. Here, we augment these rapid results by grouping events based on patterns of correlation-derived phase polarities across the network. From April 29 to August 6, bracketing the eruption, we used ~2800 events cataloged by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to detect and precisely locate 44,000+ earthquakes. Resulting hypocentroids resolve complex,...
Data on 17 metrics of shale gas development in the Pennsylvania portion of the Upper Susquehanna River basin that was collated from a variety of sources and summarized at the upstream catchment scale. Data were also standardized by upstream area and transformed into rank scores based on metric distribution and then summarized into a Disturbance Intensity Index (DII). See Maloney et al. 2018 for detailed descriptions of each data sets and limitations of data. (Maloney, K. O., J. A. Young, S. P. Faulkner, A. Hailegiorgis, E. T. Slonecker, and L. E. Milheim. 2018. Benthic diatom assemblages are known to be indicative of water quality but have yet to be widely adopted in biological assessments in the United States due to several limitations. Our goal was to address some of these limitations by developing regional multi-metric indices (MMIs) that are robust to inter-laboratory taxonomic inconsistency, adjusted for natural covariates, and sensitive to a wide range of anthropogenic stressors. We aggregated bioassessment data from two national-scale federal programs and used a data-driven analysis in which all-possible combinations of 2-7 metrics were compared for three measures of performance. The datasets in this release support the Carlisle, et al. 2022 report cited herein....

Intracoelomic implantation of electronic tags has become a common method in fishery research, but rarely are fish examined by scientists after release to understand the extent that surgical incisions have healed. Walleye (Sander vitreus) are a valuable, highly-exploited fishery resource in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, fishery capture of walleye with internal acoustic transmitters combined with a high reward program provided multiple opportunities to examine photographs and quantify the status of surgical incisions. Walleye (n=926) from reef and river spawning populations in Lake Erie and Lake Huron were implanted with acoustic transmitters during spring spawning events from 2011 to 2016. Incisions were closed...

This data release supports interpretations of field-observed root distributions within a shallow landslide headscarp (CB1) located below Mettman Ridge within the Oregon Coast Range, approximately 15 km northeast of Coos Bay, Oregon, USA. (Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_far.png and Schmidt_2021_CB1_topo_close.png). Root species, diameter (greater than or equal to 1 mm), general orientation relative to the slide scarp, and depth below ground surface were characterized immediately following landsliding in response to large-magnitude precipitation in November 1996 which triggered thousands of landslides within the area (Montgomery and others, 2009). The enclosed data includes: (1) tests of root-thread failure as a function of...

During summer 2019, botanists with the Maine Natural Areas Program collected data from 94 vegetation plots for plant community characterization. The sampling data were entered into the National Park Service PLOTS version 4.0 (National Park Service 2018) for analyses to characterize vegetation associations in the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. An accuracy assessment was performed on the draft version of the vegetation map layer. During the summer of 2020, field crews collected data from 107 stratified and randomly selected sites for evaluating the accuracy of the vegetation map layer for those map classes representing U.S. National Vegetation Classification associations. The accuracy assessment field data...

This data release contains results of model simulations of a plume at Kilauea volcano that occurred on 20 December 2020. The ash-poor plume was produced when lava flowed into a water lake at the summit of Kilauea volcano. Simulations were conducted to constrain the conditions under which the plume rose to its observed height. The analysis and results are described in the accompanying paper: Cahalan RC, Mastin L, Van Eaton A, Hurwitz S, Smith AB, Dufek J, Solovitz SA, Patrick M, Schmith J, Parcheta C, Thelen W, Downs DT (2023 (in press)) Dynamics of the December 2020 ash-poor plume formed by lava-water interaction at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawaiʻi. This data release contains one dataset and one model archive in support of the journal article, "Leveraging machine learning to automate regression model evaluations for large multi-site water-quality trend studies," by Jennifer C. Murphy and Jeffrey G. Chanat. The model archive contains scripts (run in R) to reproduce the four machine learning models (logistic regression, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis, and k-nearest neighbors) trained and tested as part of the journal article. The dataset contains the estimated probabilities for each of these models when applied to a training and test dataset.

This data set consists of digital data describing wetlands and uplands habitats for the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP) area, consisting of Cat, Ship, Horn and Petit Bois Islands for the year 2020. Wetlands were classified using the Cowardin, et al., wetlands classification scheme to the level of freshwater and tidal, salinity modifiers. Uplands were classified using a customized classification scheme which can be cross-referenced to Anderson, et. al. For this dataset, upland dunes were delineated as areas at or above 1.524 meters (5 feet) as determined in the Lidar data that was referenced without modification for this classification. With this elevation criteria some delineated upland dune features...

A green-tree reservoir (GTR) is a stand of bottomland hardwoods that is intentionally flooded in the fall and winter to support migrating waterfowl. Bottomland hardwood forest plots in the GTR on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (FNWR) are measured every 5-6 years to monitor tree survival, growth, and mortality. This dataset presents the measurements of all the trees in 54 plots during the year 2001. Parameters measured are species, diameter, vigor class, canopy class, and whether or not the tree is a new recruit in 2001. These parameters are defined in the Entity and Attributes section of this metadata file. Additional Information: A series of square 0.1 ha (31.6 m X 31.6 m) permanent plots was previously established...

This dataset contains a thematic [classified] image derived from supervised classification of WorldView-3 satellite imagery. This data release contains a geospatial thematic (raster) image derived from a supervised classification of WorldView-3 satellite imagery obtained during 2020–21. Arundo donax (Arundo cane, giant reed, or Carrizo cane), is an invasive bamboo-like perennial grass most common to riparian areas throughout the southwestern United States. Because it displaces native riparian vegetation, Arundo cane has greatly disrupted the health of riparian ecosystems in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico during the past 50 years. Arundo cane also has created border security problems along the...
