Integrated biostratigraphy of foraminifers, radiolarians and conodonts in shallow and deep water Middle Permian (Capitanian) deposits of the "Rader slide", Guadalupe Mountains, West Texas
A diverse assemblage of microfossils is present in a 6m thick sequence of three debris flow deposits interbedded with thin turbidite limestone beds and fine grained siliciclastics exposed above the megaconglomerate in a section (known as the "Rader Slide" in numerous guidebook stops) of the Rader Limestone Member of the Bell Canyon Formation of Capitanian age (Middle Permian) in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas. Each debris flow, derived from nearby Capitan Reef shelf-margin and slope deposits, contains a distinct microfossil assemblage. Recognizing former flood-tide deltas in the Holocene stratigraphic record from the Outer Banks, North Carolina, USA
Foraminiferal and sedimentologic data were collected by vibracoring a small, relict, short-lived, migrating inlet (New Inlet) and its flood-tide delta on the Outer Banks, North Carolina. These data, placed in the context of geospatial data derived from ground penetrating radar, were developed into a stratigraphic model for this sedimentary environment. The model was applied to vibracores collected from two additional barrier island segments within which historic inlets had not been recorded to investigate whether inlets had existed in these segments in the past. The newly named Upland Valley Limestone represents a carbonate complex that developed on and adjacent to a tectonically active island in east-central California during a brief interval of Early Permian (late Artinskian) time. This lithologically unique, relatively thin limestone unit lies within a thick sequence of predominantly siliciclastic rocks and is characterized by its high concentration of crinoidal debris, pronounced lateral changes in thickness and lithofacies, and a largely endemic fusulinid fauna. The Pliocene Research, Interpretation and Synoptic Mapping (PRISM) paleoenvironmental reconstruction is an internally consistent and comprehensive global synthesis of a past interval of relatively warm and stable climate. It is regularly used in model studies that aim to better understand Pliocene climate, to improve model performance in future climate scenarios, and to distinguish model-dependent climate effects. As the most fossiliferous and least deformed succession of unequivocally Laurentian lower Paleozoic strata in Alaska, the Jones Ridge Limestone has provided critical data for numerous stratigraphic studies (e. g. Palmer 1968; Harris et al. 1995; Dumoulin et al. 2002; Dumoulin and Harris 2012) focused on the Cambrian and Ordovician of northwestern North America/northeastern Laurentia (Figure 1).
