The paper version of the Geologic Map of the eastern part of the Challis National Forest and vicinity, Idaho was compiled by Anna Wilson and Betty Skipp in 1994. The geology was compiled on a 1:250,000 scale topographic base map. TechniGraphic System, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado digitized this map under contract for N.Shock. G.Green edited and prepared the digital version for publication as a GIS database. The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps.

The Raton basin is a large asymmetric syncline (2500 mi2 area) that extends from Huerfano Park, Colorado to Cimarron, New Mexico. As used here, the basin is defined by the limits of the outcrop of the Trinidad Sandstone. The Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are sharply flexed to form hogbacks along the western margin of the basin on the east flank of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These rocks assume more gentle dips along the other margins of the Raton basin and are highly dissected. The Late Cretaceous in the Raton basin was a period of emergence of land and retreat of the Cretaceous epeiric sea. This data release contains processed high-resolution multichannel sparker seismic-reflection (MCS) data that were collected aboard Humboldt State University’s R/V Coral Sea in October of 2018 on U.S. Geological Survey cruise 2018-658-FA on the shelf and slope between Cape Blanco, Oregon, and Cape Mendocino, California. MCS data were collected to characterize quaternary deformation and sediment dynamics along the southern Cascadia margin.

This Data Release contains geospatially-enabled geological data to accompany the Geologic Map of the Central Beaverhead Mountains, Lemhi County, Idaho, and Beaverhead County, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3413. This map portrays detailed geology of the central Beaverhead Mountains, printable at 1:50,000 scale. These data were collected between 1997 and 2017, and synthesized to provide significant new stratigraphic and structural data and interpretations. Generalized basin geology compiled from sources on both sides of the range is combined with newly mapped bedrock geology to better integrate geologic development of the map area. This dataset accompanies planned publication 'Detrital record of the Late Oligocene – Early Miocene mafic volcanic arc in the Southern Patagonian Andes (~51°S) from single-clast geochronology and trace element geochemistry'. The Ar/Ar data is for samples that record the detrital sedimentary record of the basin. The geochronology provides time constraints for the sedimentation studied in the manuscript. Samples were collected from the Magallanes-Austral Basin, and collection was supervised by Julie Fosdick, who sent them to the USGS for Ar/Ar analysis.

A 3D temperature model is constructed in order to support the estimation of physical parameters within the USGS National Crustal Model. The crustal model is defined by a geological framework consisting of various lithologies with distinct mineral compositions. A temperature model is needed to calculate mineral density and bulk and shear modulus as a function of position within the crust. These properties control seismic velocity and impedance, which are needed to accurately estimate earthquake travel times and seismic amplitudes in earthquake hazard analyses. This Laser ablation ICPMS U-Pb detrital zircon data set supports mapping and stratigraphic interpretations of the Upper Devonian Ignacio Formation in southwestern Colorado (Silverton area). All samples were collected from a measured stratigraphic section called "Sultan Creek South" located at 37.710010 and -107.67530 (Evans and others, 2019). The Ignacio Formation was previously interpreted as Cambrian, but evidence that it is Devonian includes reexamined fossil data and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology. The Ignacio Formation has a stratigraphic trend of detrital zircon ages shifting from a single ca. 1.7 Ga age peak to bimodal ca. 1.4 Ga and ca. 1.7 Ga age peaks, which represents local source-area unroofing history....

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) undertook a 5-year study beginning in 2016 to assess groundwater availability for the aquifers proximal to the Gulf of Mexico from the Texas-Mexico border to the western part of the panhandle of Florida; these aquifers are collectively referred to as the coastal lowlands aquifer system. This study is one of several regional groundwater availability studies being done as part of the USGS Water Availability and Use Science Program. For use as part of a regional petroleum assessment, the USGS in the early 1990’s developed a dataset reporting elevation on the surface of the Precambrian basement of the central and southern Colorado Plateau and vicinity (Butler, 1991). Some of the highest grade uranium (U) deposits in the United States are hosted by solution-collapse breccia pipes in the Grand Canyon region of northern Arizona. These structures are named for their vertical, pipe-like shape and the broken rock (breccia) that fills them. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of these structures exist. Not all of the breccia pipes are mineralized; only a small percentage of the identified breccia pipes are known to contain an economic uranium deposit. An unresolved question is how many undiscovered U-bearing breccia pipes of this type exist in northern Arizona, in the region sometimes referred to as the “Arizona Strip”.
