FY2016Monitor the diversity and abundance of winged insects (including Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera), which include many key insect pollinators, using an array of passive and active trapping methods. Monitor bat diversity and relative densities using passive acoustic monitoring stations (we will use full-spectrum passive recording units). Monitor diversity and abundance of reptiles (lizards and snakes), using trap arrays (pitfall and coverboard) and time-constrained visual encounter surveys. Create empirically supported models of reptile, bat, and insect diversity and abundance as a function of vegetation structure and composition, microclimate, and other environmental variables,...

The Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Database (NAS) information resource is an established central repository for spatially referenced biogeographic accounts of introduced aquatic species. The NAS website provides scientific reports, online/real-time queries, spatial data sets, distribution maps, fact sheets, and general information.

The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) requires the use of ecological indicators to measure the success of restoration efforts. The Everglades amphibian community is ideal because amphibians are present in all habitats and under all hydrologic regimes. During Everglades restoration, hydrologic patterns will change and the response of ecological indicators will determine success. Fourteen amphibian species were detected through visual encounter surveys, vocalization surveys and trapping methods throughout the study and the occurrence information collected in this project database.

These data represent the interaction between two male individuals of California Kingsnakes in Apache Junction, northern Pinal County, Arizona. The interaction was observed, recorded on video, and documented. The dataset is a time series description of the interaction and behaviors of two male California Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis californiae; the two individuals are labeled "B" and "D" for purposes of description) which was used to describe aspects of the interaction in the accompanying publication. Second-by second breakdown of the video sequence provided the "time-stamped" descriptions contained in the data table. These data support the journal article "Lampropeltis californiae (California Kingsnake) behavior, male...

These datasets include occurrence points and trait data for freshwater fishes, amphibians, and reptiles native to Oregon State. Occurrence data were extracted from the VertNet database and include points within Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, as well as points found within ecoregions that overlap with Oregon state (U.S. EPA Level III EcoRegions). Occurrence points include records from years 1930-2002, and only records with associated museum voucher specimens were included. Database was updated to include one record per species, per year, at a given location. Records were evaluated by taxonomic experts for each species, and suspicious records were either verified or excluded. Trait data were gathered from published...

Mapping of terrestrial vertebrates focuses on linking a spatial representation of species-habitat matrices to geographic distribution. Each model is a combination of distribution from regional and state references in association with contiguous appropriate habitats. Ranges for all species were based on 8-digit HUCs. Habitats were based on a raster SWReGAP 1 acre MMU land cover data set, with hydrology habitats added in from USGS NHD dataset directly or through modeling. Habitat association information was obtained from various state, regional, and national references with updates from scientific literature. This portion of the Southwest Regional Gap Analysis Project produced predicted habitat distribution maps for...

These data were acquired from 7 study sites distributed across the range of Gopherus agassizii. Data were collected from 1997 to 2002 as part of three separate studies, although data were not collected at all sites in each year. Radio-transmitters were attached to the carapace of 151 females and VHF radio-telemetry was used to relocate animals to assess reproductive status. Egg production was determined from X-radiographs taken weekly/biweekly intervals (depending on the study) using a portable X-ray machine between April and July or August of each year. In addition, the mean carapace length (MCL) of each tortoise was measured at each time of capture or recapture using calipers (mm). A nesting event was recorded...

These data were compiled to evaluate reproductive output of Agassiz's desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizzi) in relation to environmental and individual-level variables. We collected data from four study sites in the Sonoran Desert of California, including two separate populations within Joshua Tree National Park, one population located on the northern versant of the Orocopia Mountains, and one population located at the extreme western end of the Coachella Valley. These data represent eight reproductive seasons that spanned over 20 years (1997-2000, 2015-2018). These data were compiled and added to a larger database with additional records collected by other scientists from eight other study sites in order to detect...
The Mogollon Narrowheaded gartersnake (Thamnophis rufipunctatus) and the Northern Mexican gartersnake (Thamnophis eques megalops) are both listed as Threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Both species have a strong association with aquatic habitats, and these habitats have been highly altered from impoundments, land-use changes, and the introduction and spread of non-native aquatic species, which have contributed to declines in Arizona and New Mexico over the last 30-40 years. We characterized 125 microsatellite loci per species to generate genetic toolsets for use in long term genetic monitoring of populations. We evaluated microsatellite loci for missing data and several variability thresholds, which...

These data show the multilocus genotypes, gender, and midline carapace length (MCL) for desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) sampled in the central portion of the Mojave desert tortoise range. This data supports the following publication: Dutcher, K.E., Vandergast, A.G., Esque, T.C., Mitelberg, A., Matocq, M.D., Heaton, J.S. and Nussear, K.E., Genes in space: what Mojave Desert tortoise genetics can tell us about landscape connectivity. This dataset contains morphometric information from Burmese pythons collected from an invasive population in southern Florida between 1995-2021. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service curated this dataset as a repository for records of Burmese pythons found on or nearby federal lands in southern Florida, including Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Biscayne National Park, and Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. As such, numerous entities actively or incidentally involved in python research or management activities contributed specimens and/or data to this dataset, including but not limited to the U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, U.S. Fish...

These data represent incidental observations of western pond turtles (Emys [Actinemys] marmorata) collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center, at Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area between 1993 and 2014. These data do not have associated survey effort, and are intended to represent incidental observations, rather than a random, systematic, or exhaustive survey for western pond turtles. The data include turtle location, observation date, and observer information.
The goals of this study are to: (1) generate a genetic toolset (80-90 microsatellite loci per species) for long term genetic monitoring of both wild and captive populations of each threatened gartersnake species (THEQ & THRU) that inhabit Arizona and New Mexico; (2) conduct field surveys at Saliz Creek to assess the genetic, demographic, and life history effects of a 2012 wild translocation event for THRU to better assess the strategies of genetic management and success of translocations; (3) conduct targeted surveys for both species at key sites to collect additional samples from geographic gaps and increase sample sizes at previously sampled sites to further evaluate connectivity and genetic diversity of these...
