The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element has overseen the collection, processing, and serving of bathymetric data since 1989. A systemic data collection for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) was completed in 2010. Water depth in aquatic systems is important for describing the physical characteristics of a river. Bathymetric maps are used for conducting spatial inventories of the aquatic habitat and detecting bed and elevation changes due to sedimentation. Bathymetric data is widely used, specifically for studies of water level management alternatives, modeling navigation impacts and hydraulic conditions, and environmental...
The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Aerial images of Pools 1-13 Upper Mississippi River System and Pools, Alton-Marseilles, Illinois River were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. In August 2011, CIR aerial images of Pools 14-Open River South, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Dresden-Lockport, Illinois River were collected at 16”/pixel with the same camera. The CIR aerial images were interpreted and automated using a 31-class LTRM vegetation classification....

This set of non-spatial tables provides a detailed link (crosswalk) between the general classification within Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) land cover/use (LCU) geospatial layers and the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC), current as of April 2017. The Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program’s LTRM element has produced LCU data over the past three decades consisting of geospatial layers (maps) showing locations of vegetation and developed lands within the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). The LCU data layers contain a classification of 31 general classes specifically developed to meet needs and objectives of the LTRM element of the UMRR Program. Because the LTRM classification...

Ecosystem metabolism is a measure of energy flow in terrestrial and aquatic environments that quantifies a balance between the rate of biomass production by photosynthesizing plants and the rate of biomass oxidation by respiring plants and animals to maintain and build living biomass. It is therefore a fundamental measure of ecosystem function that quantifies the balance between the rate of production, maintenance, and decay of organic matter. It also provides an understanding of energy flow to higher trophic levels that supports food webs with secondary and tertiary productivity. Furthermore, metabolism helps explain when aquatic ecosystems undergo out-of-balance behaviors such as hypoxia. Recent advances in sensor...

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program, through its Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element, collected aerial imagery of the systemic Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) during the summer of 2020. A Land Cover/Land Use (LCU) spatial database was developed based on the 2020 aerial imagery, which adds a fourth systemic-wide database to the existing 1989, 2000, and 2010/11 LCU databases. While a crosswalk was used to update the 1989 LCU database (originally developed using a different classification system), the 2000, 2010/11, and 2020 LCU databases share the same classification, making them directly comparable from a classification standpoint. Furthermore, protocols...

Using high-resolution sonar technologies with geographic information systems (GIS) and object based image analysis, benthic habitats of the Illinois River will be interpreted to support Asian carp research, monitoring and control. The entire study plan will consist of data collection and analysis of the Brandon, Dresden, Starved Rock, Marseilles, Peoria, La Grange and Alton reaches of the Illinois River. Reaches with larger aquatic areas (Peoria, La Grange and Alton), will have priority areas and backwaters collected and analyzed first.

ADCP data were collected on July 31-August 1, 2013 in the Dresden Island Pool on the Des Plaines River using a Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler with integrated Trimble Ag162 GPS. On July 31-August 1, 2013 the Des Plaines River discharge also was approximately 2,000-3,000 cfs. ADCP data was collected in reciprocal pairs along cross-sections and along roughly streamwise oriented lines between cross-sections. The data are provided in: (1) a zipped folder containing classic ascii output files exported from WinRiverII software, and a README text file indicating which files are reciprocal pairs, and which files are streamwise oriented lines (2) a zipped folder containing KML files for each...

Data include Rhodamine WT dye concentrations measured every 3 or 10 minutes by means of Turner Designs C-3 and C-6 fluorometers with internal dataloggers at three fixed locations on the Des Plaines River (DPR) (DP-1, DP-2, and DP-3); in three groundwater monitoring wells (ACL-1, WP10-85, and WP9-275); and at two fixed locations on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) (SC-1 and SC-2) (see included Google Earth file AllDeployments_Locations.kmz). The detection limit for these fluorometers is reported to be 0.01 parts per billion (ppb). However, the fluorometer readings were affected by turbidity, and readings of less than about 1.0 part per billion (ppb) were considered to have been influenced by turbidity and...

This dataset represents results from this study attributed to the NHDPlus V2 catchments. Changes in climate occurring throughout the Mississippi River Basin are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing changing thermal properties and flow regimes. To manage streams for current impacts and future changes, managers need region-wide information for decision-making and developing proactive management strategies. Our project provides a suite of climate metrics that have been found to be relevant to the distribution and population structure of aquatic organisms in freshwater stream networks. These results provide natural resource managers, decision-makers,...

A potentiometric surface map for spring 2016 was created for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer, which was referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), using most of the available groundwater-altitude data from wells and surface-water-altitude data from streamgages. Most of the wells were measured annually or one time, after installation, but some wells were measured more than one time in a year and a small number of wells were measured continually. Streamgages were typically operated continuously. The potentiometric surface map for 2016 was created as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Availability and Use Science Program to support investigations that characterize...
The spatial extents of verified irrigated lands were compiled from various federal and state sources across the nation and combined into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) geodatabase for the purpose of model training and validation. In cooperation with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), researchers at the University of Wisconsin (UW) generated a nation-wide map of irrigated lands using remote-sensing techniques that will be incorporated into future irrigation water-use models. The verified spatial data varies in scope, accuracy, and time period represented, but in general represents GIS coverages (polygons) of agricultural land irrigated for at least some period during 2002–17. Data from 14 states were provided...

Residence time distribution (RTD) is a critically important characteristic of groundwater flow systems; however, it cannot be measured directly. RTD can be inferred from tracer data with analytical models (few parameters) or with numerical models (many parameters). The second approach permits more variation in system properties but is used less frequently than the first because large-scale numerical models can be resource intensive. With the data and computer codes in this data release users can (1) reconstruct and run 115 General Simulation Models (GSMs) of groundwater flow, (2) calculate groundwater age metrics at selected GSM cells, (3) train a boosted regression tree model using the provided data, (4) predict...

In 2013, the first of several Regional Stream Quality Assessments (RSQA) was done in the Midwest United States. The Midwest Stream Quality Assessment (MSQA) was a collaborative study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA), the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA). One of the objectives of the RSQA, and thus the MSQA, is to characterize the relationships between water-quality stressors and stream ecology and to determine the relative effects of these stressors on aquatic biota within the streams (U.S. Geological Survey, 2012). To meet this objective, a framework of fundamental...

Background information. In the late 1800s through the early 1900s, nearly all of the area that is now the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge (Crab Orchard NWR) was either logged for timber or cleared and converted to other uses, particularly agriculture. By the 1930s, soils in the area were depleted and severely eroded. Additional clearing and development ensued with the establishment of the Illinois Ordnance Plant during World War II. In 2014, as part of the effort to restore Crab Orchard NWR lands to benefit wildlife, the refuge undertook the Hampton native prairie restoration project to convert a 62-acre nonnative cool-season hay field into a native warm-season grassland. The primary benefit of this restoration...
