High radium (Ra) concentrations in potable portions of the Cambrian-Ordovician (C-O) aquifer system were investigated using water-quality data and environmental tracers ( 3H, 3Hetrit, SF6 , 14C and 4Herad) of groundwater age from 80 public-supply wells (PSWs). Groundwater ages were estimated by calibration of tracers to lumped parameter models and ranged from modern (1 Myr) in the most downgradient, confined portions of the potable system. More than 80 and 40 percent of mean groundwater ages were older than 1000 and 50,000 yr, respectively. Anoxic, Fe-reducing conditions and increased mineralization develop with time in the aquifer system and mobilize Ra into solution resulting in the frequent occurrence of combined...
This dataset provides shapefile outlines of the 7,150 lakes that had temperature modeled as part of this study. The format is a shapefile for all lakes combined (.shp, .shx, .dbf, and .prj files). A csv file of lake metadata is also included. This dataset is part of a larger data release of lake temperature model inputs and outputs for 7,150 lakes in the U.S. states of Minnesota and Wisconsin (http://dx.doi.org/10.5066/P9CA6XP8).

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been engaged in airborne electromagnetics (AEM) since the 1970s, playing a role in the development of early acquisition systems, developing calibration methods, refining standards for data acquisition, improving data processing, modeling, and interpretation methods, and expanding the range of AEM applications. However, USGS AEM survey visibility and data accessibility has not advanced as rapidly as our use of the technique. This data release catalogs AEM surveys in the United States that have contributed to studies under USGS programs including Water, Geologic Mapping, Minerals, Energy, Environmental Health, Ecosystems, Hazards, and Climate. This dataset contains locations for...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired November 2018 to February 2019 along 16,816 line-kilometers (line-km) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP). Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different helicopter-borne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. Resolve frequency-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 100 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that...
These data were collected using a 1200 kHz TRDI Rio Grande acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in mode 12 with 25 centimeter bins from a moving boat. The data were georeferenced with a Hemisphere Crescent A100 differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with submeter accuracy. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column and temporally averaged over 5-second intervals to reduce noise. These data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) concurrently with environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling in this reach of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Data were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox...

Velocity
Water velocities and discharge were measured in the lock chamber and immediately downstream of Brandon Road Lock on the Des Plaines River at river mile 286 on December 9-10, 2014 using Teledyne RDI Rio Grande 600 and 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with a differential GPS receiver with submeter accuracy. These ADCP measurements were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). Velocity measurements were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013) to derive temporally- and spatially-averaged water velocity values. Discharge measurements were processed with the QRev discharge...

In 2013, the first of several Regional Stream Quality Assessments (RSQA) was done in the Midwest United States. The Midwest Stream Quality Assessment (MSQA) was a collaborative study by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Assessment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Rivers and Streams Assessment. One of the objectives of the RSQA, and thus the MSQA, is to characterize relations between stream ecology and water-quality stressors to determine the relative effects of these stressors on aquatic biota in streams. Data required to meet this objective included fish species and abundance data and physical and chemical water-quality characteristics of the ecological reaches of the sites...
This dataset contains the trace element concentration results for samples collected from tapwater sites in East Chicago, Indiana, August-September, 2017, and Chicago, Illinois, July-December, 2017. Samples were collected one time, from 45 private residences and associated drinking water plants and source water locations. Water-quality samples were analyzed at two U.S. Geological Survey laboratories: National Water Quality Laboratory, Denver, Colorado and at the Redox Chemistry Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado.

These data were collected to estimate detection probability of Bombus affinis at known occupied sites in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa in 2021. Data were also used to determine the effect of weather, observer experience, and habitat quality on Bombus affinis detection probability.
The U.S. Geological Survey is developing national water-use models to support water resources management in the United States. Model benefits include a nationally consistent estimation approach, greater temporal and spatial resolution of estimates, efficient and automated updates of results, and capabilities to forecast water use into the future and assess model uncertainty. This data release contains data used in a machine learning model to estimate monthly water use for communities that are supplied by public-supply water systems in the conterminous United States for 2000-2020. This data release also contains associated scripts used to produce input features as well as model output values by 12-digit hydrologic...
The data collection for the concrete-walled channel downstream from the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois occurred in May 2014 Five pounds per square inch (lb/in2) was used as a threshold water pressure value for this study as this value incorporates fish behavior and structural integrity considerations. The Brandon Road study evaluated the performance of two different water gun configurations within the concrete-walled channel downstream from the lock with depths ranging from 12-15 feet. Data from a single 80 cubic inch (in³) water gun produced a roughly cylindrical 5 lb/in2 pressure field 20 feet in radius, oriented vertically, with the radius decreasing to less than 15 feet at the surface. A combination...

In August 2015, water velocities around a fully-loaded commercial barge tow were measured as the barge tow traveled upstream through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal from a starting position in Lockport Pool, and passed through the Electric Dispersal Barrier System at river mile (RM) 296 near Romeoville, IL. Velocity measurements were made in and alongside the gap formed by the junction between the boxed stern of a rake hopper barge and the raked bow of a rake tanker barge (herein referred to as the rake-to-box junction gap) using two SonTek Argonaut SW 3kHz acoustic Doppler velocity meters (ADVM). One ADVM was mounted 0.091 meters below the water surface, facing downward in the center of the rake-to-box junction...

USGS Science Data Catalog (SDC),
A one-year seismic hazard forecast for the Central and Eastern United States, based on induced and natural earthquakes, has been produced by the U.S. Geological Survey. The model assumes that earthquake rates calculated from several different time windows will remain relatively stationary and can be used to forecast earthquake hazard and damage intensity for the year 2016. This assessment is the first step in developing an operational earthquake forecast for the CEUS, and the analysis could be revised with updated seismicity and model parameters. Consensus input models consider alternative earthquake catalog durations, smoothing parameters, maximum magnitudes, and ground motion estimates, and represent uncertainties...
