Objectives: 1. To make in-stream structures that were placed into Muddy Creek for stream reclamation passable to fish while still maintain the purpose and function of the original structure. 2. To reconnect 50 miles of contiguous stream habitat for BLM sensitive fishes including the Colorado River cutthroat troat, bluehead sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub. Background: Muddy Creek is the only system in Wyoming where viable populations of BLM sensitive Colorado River cutthroat trout, bluehead sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub coexist. Bluehead sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub populations have declined by about 50% range-wide and although Muddy Creek has the largest population...

Synopsis: Working in collaboration with state, federal, and private partners, GRVLT seeks funding for Phase II of its Wildlife-Friendly Fencing Initiative. The second phase of this five-year initiative offers cost-free livestock- and wildlife-friendly fence improvements to interested public and private landowners within a portion of a key mule deer migration route. This corridor, as identified in the Sublette Mule Deer Study (Phase II): Final Report 2007, runs from the Hoback Rim to Big Sandy in Sublette County, Wyoming and links important habitat for mule deer, pronghorn, and other species. Improving fencing is critical to the survival of big game, as they must be able to move freely between seasonal ranges....

Field measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity were used to characterize the streambed permeability for two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. Saturated hydraulic conductivity, denoted by K, was measured with a backpack permeameter and modified Mark VI groundwater standpipe using the constant head method of Terhune [1958]. For each reach, permeameter measurements were collected at ten sites spanning a single...

Sage-grouse habitat areas divided into proposed management categories within Nevada and California project study boundaries. MANAGEMENT CATEGORY DETERMINATION The process for category determination was directed by the Nevada Sagebrush Ecosystem Technical team. Sage-grouse habitat was determined from a statewide resource selection function model and first categorized into 4 classes: high, moderate, low, and non-habitat. The standard deviations (SD) from a normal distribution of RSF values created from a set of validation points (10% of the entire telemetry dataset) were used to categorize habitat ‘quality’ classes. High quality habitat comprised pixels with RSF values < 0.5 SD, Moderate > 0.5 and < 1.0 SD, Low...

We collected spatial data on birds as part of a broader effort to understand food webs in California Estuaries. The survey area was Carpinteria Salt Marsh, California USA, which comprises 9 Ha tidal channels, 2 Ha salt flats, 17 Ha upland habitat, 6 Ha tidal pans, 52 Ha vegetated marsh, and 2 Ha tidal flats. A fixed transect was walked and birds were mapped if they were in the intertidal habitat. We also included some species, like raptors, if they were perched in adjacent upland habitats, but potentially interact with the estuary. With GIS, these data can be used to evaluate bird distributions, by species, in space and time, in this habitat. There are two data files in this release (1) Bird distribution surveys...
The Cooperative Land Cover Map is a project to develop an improved statewide land cover map from existing sources and expert review of aerial photography. The project is directly tied to a goal of Florida's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) to represent Florida's diverse habitats in a spatially-explicit manner. The Cooperative Land Cover Map integrates 3 primary data types: 1) 6 million acres are derived from local or site-specific data sources, primarily on existing conservation lands. Most of these sources have a ground-truth or local knowledge component. We collected land cover and vegetation data from 37 existing sources. Each dataset was evaluated for consistency and quality and assigned a confidence category...
Construct a riparian exclosure on Gooseberry Creek for habitat protection and enhancement and to improve effectiveness of an erosion control structure. This exclosure will reduce a headcut caused by livestock and wild horses accessing the creek around an existing erosion control structure. The structure was placed to stop migration of a headcut up Gooseberry Creek that would also threaten the County road. 2008 Update: This project enhances and protects water quality in Gooseberry Creek by reducing a headcut forming around an existing erosion control structure. The exclosure (JH) encompasses about six acres and ensures the existing erosion control structure will stay intact and functional. Access to the creek for...

The strategy of low stress livestock handling has been documented to increase stubble heights along greenlines. Intuitively one could assume that since there is a significant increase in stubble height, then that fact alone would make for 'enhanced' late brood rearing habitat for the Greater Sage Grouse. In addition to an increase in stubble heights this low stress strategy increased utilization of uplands. In this case, on the surface, it would appear that the low stress strategy 'decreased' the quality of nesting and early brood rearing habitat. On the surface, it appears the strategy of low stress livestock handling has both pros and cons that need to be addressed on a more relevant management scale. The...

Project Synopsis: this project would fund the labor for mechanical, biological, and chemical applications in an effort to gain control of Perennial pepperweed, Russian knapweed, whitetop, Marsh sowthistle, and saltcedar. The watershed drains into the North Platte River which currently does not have perennial pepperweed. This area has crucial winter range for deer and elk, and yearlong range for antelope. There are sage grouse wintering areas and brood-rearing habitat, as well as numerous leks, and mountain plover. There are perennial streams with several species of willow. There have been efforts to improve Sage Creek proper, which was listed on the 303d list of impaired streams due to habitat degradation, and...

The strategy for this project will incorporate Fall and Spring treatments of BLM approved herbicide on approximately 100 acres. Following treatments will not exceed 1000 acres per treatment year. The Sublette County Weed and Pest is also providing support for this project through aerial, roadside, and follow-up backpack applications. They are also supplying herbicides for the initial treatment. Habitat classification are mixed cool season grasses, Big Sagebrush communities, winter range for Mule Deer, moose, pygmy rabbit, and brood rearing habitat for sage-grouse. This area is not an active allotment; however, due to treatment timing grazing will not be affected. Livestock management will not be affected but grazing...

The private landowner and the FWS Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program propose to enhance approximately 72.3 acres of wetland through the construction and repair of dikes and water control structures on flood-irrigated land. Projects in the currently irrigated meadows comprise 14.3 acres of the 72.3 acres, which will be completed in the first phase of the project. Irrigation infrastructure will be enhanced to aid in spreading and backing flood-irrigation water on 14.3 acres of land within the approximately 575 acre complex of irrigated wet meadows. More specifically, 7 dikes and 8 water control structures will enhance the landowner’s ability to irrigate the land, while increasing open water in the wetlands. Incremental...

Wheat Creek Meadows Wildlife Habitat Area (WCM) is a 1600 acre wildlife habitat area acquired by the BLM through a land exchange in 1988. It lies 15 miles north of Kemmerer, Wyoming on the south end of the Wyoming Range. The property has two perennial streams, Wheat and West Willow Creeks. The main goal for WCM was to provide protection of wildlife habitat and wetlands with special emphasis on maximizing the potential for wildlife species production and diversity. The area provides habitat for many Special Status Species including the sage grouse, white-faced ibis, sage sparrow, sage thrasher, loggerhead shrike, Brewer’s sparrow, pygmy rabbit; and possibly even the Idaho pocket gopher, yellow-billed cuckoo, northern...

This project provides for reconstruction of a fence exclosure to enhance riparian and sensitive plant species habitat. The exclosure is in need of repair and its completion will also help achieve Standards for Healthy Rangelands and provide improved grazing management by allowing for rest and recovery of the vegetation within the exclosure boundaries. Wildlife species including elk, deer, antelope, and migratory waterfowl will benefit from this project. Water quality will also be improved. About 41 acres are located within the exclosure.

Relatively little is known about the interaction of land use patterns and population stability of the Northern Leatherside (Lepidomeda copei) which occurs in streams within the northeastern portions of the Bonneville Basin and select drainages of the upper Snake River of Western North America. Central to an understanding of effects of land use is a clear understanding of effects on habitat suitability and distribution. The research proposed includes studying the relationship among land use patterns, habitat structure, and population dynamics of Northern Leatherside. Specifically, we are interested in determining how habitat structure influences year-round occupancy, reproduction, and recruitment. Secondly, we will...

This fire risk assessment was conducted to understand how resilience and resistance and sage-grouse breeding bird habitat may inform wildland fire management decisions including preparedness, suppression, fuels management and post-fire recovery for western sagebrush communities. The assessment is based on the premise that risk = probability of a threat and the consequences of that threat (negative or positive). Fire risk was determined by the probability of a large wildfire and the consequences of fire on greater sage-grouse breeding habitat. These consequences were modified by the capacity of sage-grouse habitat to be resilient and thus recover from fire processes, and be resistant to invasive annual grasses. The...

The Central Valley of California is one of the most important regions for wintering waterbirds in North America despite extensive anthropogenic landscape modification and decline of historical wetlands there. Like many other mediterranean-climate ecosystems across the globe, the Central Valley has been subject to a burgeoning human population and expansion and intensification of agricultural and urban development that have impacted wildlife habitats. Future effects of urban development, changes in water supply management, and precipitation and air temperature related to global climate change on area of waterbird habitat in the Central Valley are uncertain, yet potentially substantial. Therefore, we modeled area...
