The Great Lakes Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database is managed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations across the Great Lakes. Content: The data set has been collected on various vessel operations on all the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways between the years 1930-2021. Data collection begins in early spring and ends in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission. Data Structure: These data are collected at the GLSC in the RVCAT Oracle database. This database has been broken down into comma separated value (csv) spreadsheets in order to facilitate greater...
These data consist of down-looking images of Lake Michigan benthos, collected in 2020 and 2021 with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Information about each image (i.e., latitude, longitude, depth from surface, altitude, roll, pitch, yaw, and creation time) can be found in the associated csv file. Substrate type was divided into 9 classes based on the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) and each image was assigned a substrate class by at least 3 trained labelers.

4+ year old cisco (Coregonus artedi) pre-spawn and spawning/near-spawning behavioral data were collected and compiled at the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science in Cortland, NY USA, between August-October 2021 and November-December 2021. Data are comprised of fish reactions in choice flume video data (attractance/avoidance). Cisco were exposed/not exposed to an imprinting chemical (amino acids: alanine, histidine, morpholine, proline, and serine) through early life stages, and later tested based on their treatment to see how individuals reacted to the presence of exposure chemicals during subsequent life stages. These data show how the adult stage cisco of this study ((non exposed (control) and treatment (amino...
These data have been collected on various vessel operations on the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways. This vessel operations data set is part of and connected to a larger database of Great Lakes research that includes trawl and gillnet catch data, sample information of fish species caught, as well as effort applied, operation conditions, and location details. The larger database also contains data on hydroacoustics, ichthyoplankton, zooplankton, zebra mussel, and benthos samples collected. Multiple operations were conducted on all Great Lakes each year (1958-2016) beginning in early spring and ending in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission, which are...
The data set includes fish weight, gonad weight; and for a subset of individuals, histological stage of gonad development for Lake Trout caught in Yellowstone Lake, WY. Data were collected throughout the ice-free season of 2014.
Great Lakes fishery managers and stakeholders have little information regarding how climate change could affect the management and conservation of fish populations, including those of high recreational and commercial value. Scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) worked closely with state management agencies and the National Wildlife Federation to complete several objectives that provide knowledge to aid their planning and management strategies in anticipation of coming changes. First, researchers updated a regional Great Lakes climate model to predict water level changes, water temperatures, and ice cover data for the entire Great Lakes basin 50-100 years into the future. Second, researchers used satellite...

These data were compiled to evaluate the potential adverse impacts that stocked trout may have on native fish populaitons through predation. Hatchery-reared rainbow and brown trout are typically fed exclusively on commercially prepared pelleted feeds and have no experience catching or consuming life fish at the time of stocking and yet stocked fish are percieved to present a high predation risk for juvenile native fishes. These data were compiled to allow for a relative comparison of predation effectiveness between hatchery-reared fish and wild fish. Mean numbers of prey fish surviving in replicated overnight laboratory predation trials were quantified.
The Great Lakes Research Vessel Operations data release is taken from the Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database curated at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations. Content: The data set has been collected on various vessel operations on all the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways between the years 1958-2018. Data collection begins in early spring and ends in late fall. Each vessel operation was completed for a specific purpose, or target mission, which are enumerated in this data set. In addition to vessel operations data, RVCAT collects trawl and gillnet catch data, sample information of fish species caught,...
Egg mat retention trials were conducted with walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) eggs in an experimental flume tank, seeded directly on egg mats (test retention efficiency) and hand dispersed in flowing flume water to simulate spawning over egg mats (test capture efficiency) with and without alternate substrate. In the field study, we measured number of eggs collected on mats and with bottom drift nets in the Detroit River to compare capture effectiveness. The field collection data describe the number, date of collection, and exact collection location of target species (walleye and lake whitefish). The flume trial data include number of eggs retained or collected, water velocity,...

These data were compiled to evaluate the potential impact various environmental conditions may have on native fish populaitons through predation. Introduced warm-water sport fishes present a high predation risk for juvenile native fishes, but observations of juvenile native fish surviving and recruiting in some rare cases led us to question what environmental conditions might be responsible for these trends. These data were compiled to allow for a relative comparison of predation effectiveness between a suite of warm-water predators under a variety of environmental conditions. Mean numbers of prey fish surviving in replicated overnight laboratory predation trials were quantified.
The RVCAT database contains data that have been collected on various vessel operations on the Great Lakes and select connecting waterways. This section of Reference Tables specifically handles repetitive or standardized information that is called upon in the main tables of the RVCAT database. Reference tables are used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient. All of the terms defined in the reference tables have been determined by the United States Geological Survey, Great Lakes Science Center and it’s partners. Data Quality: Note that the following data release is a snapshot of the database at the time of release. Some data quality checks are still being...
This dataset documents the length and developmental stage of pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon free embryos from the time of hatch through melanin plug expulsion (the approximate onset of exogenous feeding) reared in the laboratory at a constant temperature. Free embryos from 4 pallid sturgeon crosses and 7 shovelnose sturgeon crosses were reared separately in the laboratory at a mean temperature of 17.8 degrees Celsius (range 17.3–18.4 ). Beginning on the day of hatch, a minimum of three to six free embryos from each cross was randomly sampled and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin at 2 to 12-hour intervals, depending on age. Free embryos were microscopically examined and assigned a developmental...

These data include species occurrence records of fish in oceans within 1000 kilometers of the United States shoreline. This dataset is a subset of the OBIS-USA dataset as of December 2, 2014 and includes records of the taxonomic groups of Actinopterygii, Chondrichthyes, Myxini, Osteichthyes, and Petromyzontida. After initial taxonomic queries, the remaining data were further queried to retain only samples within 1000 kilometers of the U.S. shoreline. Spatial queries were then used to remove samples overlaying land masses. Data are provided in a geodatabase format, as well as a comma seperated values format. OBIS-USA provides aggregated, interoperable biogeographic data collected primarily from U.S. waters and oceanic...

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is an imperiled fish hypothesized to use conspecific cues, in part, to coordinate long distance migration during their multi-stage life history. Here, tissues from multiple American eel life stages were collected and analyzed for the presence and concentration of bile acids. Specifically, samples were collected in the Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory during June 2016 from yellow eel liver, intestine, and gall bladder. Whole body bile acids were also evaluated in glass and elver stage American eel. All eels were held at Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, prior to sampling. Bile acid analysis was conducted using liquid chromatography coupled...
