Earthquake-triggered ground-failure, such as landsliding and liquefaction, can contribute significantly to losses, but our current ability to accurately include them in earthquake hazard analyses is limited. The development of robust and transportable models requires access to numerous inventories of ground failure triggered by earthquakes that span a broad range of terrains, shaking characteristics, and climates. The introduction of exotic plant species into the western United States has caused substantial changes to rangeland disturbance regimes and ecosystem structure and function. For example, exotic annual grass (EAG) invasion in western rangelands has increased wildfire frequency, which greatly reduces rangeland ecosystem diversity and leads to single-species dominance in many areas. The National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility (NSF-ICF) - formerly the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) - is a facility for storing, curating, and studying meteoric ice cores recovered from glaciated regions of the world. NSF-ICF provides scientists with the capability to conduct examinations and measurements on ice cores, and it preserves the integrity of these ice cores in a long-term repository for current and future investigations.

The Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS) makes detailed predictions (meter-scale) over large geographic scales (100s of kilometers) of storm-induced coastal flooding and erosion for both current and future SLR scenarios, as well as long-term shoreline change and cliff retreat. Resulting projections for future climate scenarios (sea-level rise and storms) provide emergency responders and coastal planners with critical storm-hazards information that can be used to increase public safety, mitigate physical damages, and more effectively manage and allocate resources within complex coastal settings. State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs) are assessments of the wildlife and habitats in need of conservation action by each state. Congress mandated the states create SWAPs every ten years beginning in 2005 and are the way states receive funding from the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. Each SWAP contains a list of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) as determined by that state. Remote-sensing technologies—such as video imagery, aerial photography, satellite imagery, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry, and lidar (laser-based surveying)— can be used to measure change along U.S. coastlines. The U.S. Geological Survey Denver Library maintains a collection of more than 400,000 photographs taken during geologic studies of the United States and its territories from 1868 to the present. These images provide a visual history of the discovery, development, and sciences of the United States and its Geological Survey. Some photographs have been used in USGS publications, but most have never been published. The Biogeographic Characterization Branch (BCB) has conducted a number of activities over the last several years that have resulted in databases of named, significant spatial features that are important as a foundation for other databases and in analytical processes. We've discovered that all of these activities involve some of the same type of work in quality controls and data prep and result in a simple, common schema for the fundamental data attributes.
