Over the last few years, the ISO 19115 family of metadata standards has become the predominantly accepted worldwide standard for sharing information about the availability and usability of scientific datasets among researchers. The U.S. interests in the ISO standard have also been growing as global-scale science demands participation with the broader international community; however, adoption has been slow because of the complexity and rigor of the ISO metadata standards. The Alaska Data Integration Working Group (ADIwg) Metadata Toolkit is an open source, suite of web applications for authoring and editing metadata for both spatial and non-spatial projects and datasets. The main goal of the toolkit is to promote the creation and use of metadata by lowering the level of technical expertise required to produce archival quality metadata.mdJSON is the metadata format ties the suite of tools together.
