Summary

A total of 7724 fish were VIE tagged during this study, among these were 1505 Arkansas River Shiner, 5462 Plains Minnow, 757 were Peppered Chub. A total of 129 fish were recaptured after tagging and release. Twenty-one Arkansas River Shiner were recaptured at distances of 13.3- to 213.6-km upstream from the release site. Across all recaptures, including those from an earlier 2009-2010 study, the average rate of movement by Arkansas River Shiner, over a one-year period, is estimated to 0.42 km d-1 . Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative(Distributor)

Purpose

The objectives of this study were to (1) document the timing, distance, and rate of migration by Arkansas River Shiner, a Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative priority species, and two other broadcast-spawning cyprinids, Peppered Chub and Plains Minnow; (2) develop analytical and simulations models for these species that allow assessment of spawning migrations and their sensitivity to variation in river discharge and habitat length; (3) produce a generalized model based on study results that will allow preliminary assessments of spawning migrations and their sensitivity to variation in river discharge and habitat length for all Great Plains broadcast spawning cyprinids; and (4) determine the buoyancy of Arkansas River Shiner ova and their susceptibility to suffocation by sediments in non-flowing water.
