Summary

This data record contains fitness data for Visher's buckwheat (Eriogonum visheri) for the years 2014, 2015 and 2017 at Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA. These data include insect visitation, pollen deposited on stigmas, achene size and germination over three field seasons (two field seasons for germination: 2015 and 2017) in four populations (two populations in 2017).

Purpose

Eriogonum visheri (Visher's buckwheat) is rare native plant that is endemic to the sparse vegetation type which occurs in the western half of North and South Dakota, and eastern Montana, USA. Previous network analyses at Badlands National Park, South Dakota, suggest strong linkages between E. visheri and a native congener (E. pauciflorum, fewflower buckwheat) as well as the invasive plant Salsola tragus (Russian thistle). These analyses also suggested a weaker link to the invasive plant Melilotus officinalis (yellow sweetclover). Fitness components including seed set and germination, insect visitation and pollen deposited on stigmas were measured to assess potential population-level effects of the invasive plants on four populations of E. visheri at Badlands National Park.
