Purpose

The Northern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (North Delta) is thought to be an important refuge for imperiled fishes due to its relatively high seasonal primary production and mosaic of habitats including dead-end sloughs, open water, flowing streams, and freshwater tidal marsh. The North Delta has become a target for future habitat restoration as a means to improve habitat and resources for these species. However, there are still key uncertainties regarding which fish communities are supported by different habitat types, an important baseline to address prior to habitat restoration. The goal of this study is to evaluate the habitat preferences of resident native fish species within the North Delta to inform conservation and management decisions.
