Summary

In late August and early September 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the southeastern coastline of Texas and produced a record amount of rainfall, leading to widespread flooding. From August 25 through September 1, 2017, some areas in southeastern Texas received more than 60 inches of rain with large areas receiving at least 40 inches of rain. Hurricane Harvey was the largest rainfall event in United States history in terms of spatial extent and rainfall totals since rainfall records began in the 1880s (Watson and others, 2018). The five most heavily flooded river basins in Texas during this storm included the Brazos River, where the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected water-quality samples at the Brazos River near Rosharon, [...]

Purpose

This dataset documents water-quality data at the Brazos River site before, during, and after Hurricane Harvey, from July to December 2017. Data from a total of six water-quality samples are included (two samples collected prior to Hurricane Harvey, two samples collected during the period of higher stream discharge that resulted from Hurricane Harvey, and two samples collected after the period of higher stream discharge from Hurricane Harvey. Graphs of selected constituents concentrations (dissolved solids, suspended sediment, iron, and atrazine) are included to shows differences in concentrations among water-quality samples collected relative to variations in stream discharge. The number of pesticide detections for any pesticides detected in the six water-quality samples are shown by using a bar graph.
