Summary

This dataset provides numbers of documented mortalities for independent aged ( ≥ 2-years-old) grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) from human and undetermined causes that occurred during 1998–2017 within 49-km2 (7- x 7-km) grid cells from the Greater Yellowstone (GYE) and Northern Continental Divide (NCDE) ecosystems of the western United States.

Purpose

Grizzly bear mortality data are collected and analyzed by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) as part of the long-term monitoring of population status and trends. Information pertaining to long-term trends of documented grizzly bear mortalities within the GYE and NCDE populations provide insights into causes and distribution of grizzly bears mortalities. Areas of higher human-caused grizzly bear mortality generally correlate with areas of higher numbers of human-grizzly bear conflicts. The distribution and number of bear mortalities across large landscapes can provide managers and interested stakeholders with useful information to determine where conservation efforts may be most effective.
