Day, R.H., and McCoy, J.W., 2019, Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge green-tree reservoir study: U.S. Geological Survey data release,

A green-tree reservoir (GTR) is a stand of bottomland hardwoods that is intentionally flooded in the fall and winter to support migrating waterfowl. Bottomland hardwood forest plots, installed 1985-1987 in the GTR on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (FNWR), are measured every 5-6 years to monitor tree survival, growth, and mortality. An accompanying datafile contains the names, locations, and elevations of the forest plots. These parameters are defined in the Entity and Attributes section of this metadata file. Historical Perspective: Permanent forest plots were established between 1985 and 1987 in forest stands within the GTR on FNWR by a team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station (Teaford 1989). Water levels within the GTR of FNWR are determined by the operation of a lock and dam downstream of the refuge operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and to some extent can be manipulated at the request of FNWR managers. Data is collected in the GTR bottomland hardwood forest plots to inform FNWR managers of the effects of past management of manipulated water levels and adapt future management of hydrology to improve GTR forest health.
