Summary
BEACONs compiled point and polygon fire datasets from Canada and Alaska for the NWB LCC planning region. Fire point data details the ignition point of all fires as well as attributes describing fire area, fire cause, and fire year. Fire polygon databases provide mapped fire perimeters. These datasets include all point and polygon fires in the data sources described below. The point data spans the period 1939-2014, and the polygon data covers 1921-2014.Canada • Canadian National Fire Database o http://cwfis.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca/datamart The Canadian National Fire Database (NFDB) is a national dataset compiled from provincial and Parks Canada datasets. The Canadian National Fire Database (NFDB) is a national dataset compiled from provincial and Parks Canada datasets. As such, there is variation in the accuracy of fire locations due to different mapping techniques used by the contributing agencies. The Canadian National Fire Database contains fires from the following years for provinces that overlap the NWB LCC planning region:
• British Columbia
o Point: 1950 - 2014
o Polygon: 1921 - 2013
• Northwest Territories
o Point: 1961-2014
o Polygon: 1958-2013
• Yukon
o Point: 1946-2014
o Polygon: 1946 - 2013
Alaska
• Alaska Large Fire Database
o http://fire.ak.blm.gov/predsvcs/maps
The Alaska Large Fire Database contains point fires from 1939-2014 and polygon fires from 1940-2014.
Both the Canadian National Fire Database and the Alaska Large Fire Database are incomplete in that they do not record all fires. Point datasets are more complete than polygon datasets. The polygon datasets are less complete due to the difficulty of mapping all fires. However, the majority of recent large fires are in the polygon database.
