Summary

The mission of the US Geological Survey’s National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC) is to provide managers, policy-makers, and other stakeholders with information and decision-making tools to respond to effects of climate change on natural resources. In support of this goal, the NCASC wishes to support an exceptional mentoring experience for graduate students from select partner institutions in developing policy-relevant products related to managing climate change impacts on fish, wildlife, and/or ecosystems. For many graduate students conducting research on the impacts of climate change on natural resources, disseminating results of their research to managers, policy-makers, and/or other stakeholders is not required as part [...]

Purpose

The goal of this effort is to support graduate students in developing policy-relevant products related to managing impacts of climate change on fish and/or wildlife resources. Products will result from graduate student’s independent research, and development of these products should translate the science that they have conducted into meaningful actions that managers could take to more effectively address climate change impacts. In developing these products, students will become better informed about the importance of tailoring their research to meet needs of the broader natural resource management community. This experience will also support students in efforts to interact with representatives of USGS, including a mentor identified from within the agency and other partners from outside of academia. The goal of the continued research project is to assist the National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Center (NRCASC) in implementing mentoring experiences for graduate students that assist them in developing policy-relevant products related to managing climate change impacts on fish, wildlife, and/or ecosystems. Fellows in the program include: Ralph Tingley: Ralph is working to incorporate a Hawaii stream classification into management products and demonstrate the effectiveness of the classification approach to stakeholders in other regions of the United States, ultimately helping managers prioritize conservation initiatives in the context of changing climate. Tracy Swem: Tracy is synthesizing recent case studies involving wildlife management and climate change adaptation, analyzing the case studies for differences and similarities to the existing framework of the “Climate Smart Conservation Cycle”, and developing a regional map of adaptation case studies in North America.
