Summary

The rugged landscapes of northern Idaho and western Montana support biodiverse ecosystems, and provide a variety of natural resources and services for human communities. However, the benefits provided by these ecosystems may be at risk as changing climate magnifies existing stressors and allows new stressors to emerge. Preparation for and response to these potential changes can be most effectively addressed through multi-stakeholder partnerships, evaluating vulnerability of important resources to climate change, and developing response and preparation strategies for managing key natural resources in a changing world. This project supports climate-smart conservation and management across forests of northern Idaho and western Montana [...]

typeTechnical Summary
valueWe propose to augment an existing, landscape-scale vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategy project for U.S. Forest Service (FS) Region 1 (R1) by developing spatially explicit tools and guidance for applying vulnerability and adaptation information at multiple planning levels. The purpose of this effort is to provide information and tools for forest planning and management (e.g., NEPA analyses, forest plan revisions, Climate Change Scorecard) and other land management and conservation efforts to prepare for and respond to climate change impacts. Specific objectives include: (1) Identify how vulnerabilities and resiliencies of priority terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, individual species, and ecosystem services vary spatially in their response to climate change and non-climate change stressors; (2) Identify and prioritize implementable management responses to climate change based on spatial analysis, and describe how effectiveness of and trade-offs among potential management actions vary spatially; and (3) Develop an implementation handbook describing how to integrate climate vulnerability and adaptation strategies into specific planning and management operation levels (e.g., NEPA, forest plan revision) using case studies from Region 1 forests as examples. To achieve these objectives, we will we will work with scientists, land managers, and other stakeholders in Idaho and western Montana to select priority resources, spatially assess the vulnerabilities and resiliencies of those resources, and develop actionable management responses. Anticipated products include: (1) custom climate-informed maps for resources, and (2) an implementation handbook that provides guidance on use of vulnerability and adaptation information in management operations. All products will be posted online through NW CSC, GNLCC, and EcoAdapt websites, among others, shared through webinars, and sent directly to project participants to publicize completion and facilitate use.
