Summary

This digital map database, compiled from previously publishedand unpublished data, and new mapping by the authors, represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficialdeposits in the mapped area. Together with the accompanyingtext file (nesfmf.ps, nesfmf.pdf, nesfmf.txt), it providescurrent information on the geologic structure and stratigraphyof the area covered. The database delineates map units thatare identified by general age and lithology following thestratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. Thescale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale)of the database to 1:62,500 or smaller.

Purpose

This database and accompanying plot files depict thedistribution of geologic materials and structures at aregional (1:62,500) scale. The report is intended to providegeologic information for the regional study of materialsproperties, earthquake shaking, landslide potential, mineralhazards, seismic velocity, and earthquake faults. In addition, the report contains new information and interpretations aboutthe regional geologic history and framework. However, theregional scale of this report does not provide sufficientdetail for site development purposes. In addition, this mapdoes not take the place of fault-rupture hazard zonesdesignated by the California State Geologist (Hart and Bryant,1999). Similarly, the database cannot be used to identify ordelineate landslides in the region.
