This project represents a continuation and expansion from the KFO’s 2004 CCI Project #21055 - Bear River Cooperative Weed Management. This project is for spraying and biological control of all Invasive/Noxious Weeds within the Kemmerer Field Office (KFO) area within Lincoln and Uinta Counties. Funding costs includes hiring seasonal staff and a vehicle to continue inventorying and mapping of weeds within the area. In 2009, 1,000 acres of weeds will be treated on BLM lands and 1,000 treated acres will be evaluated. Efforts will first be directed to areas where the resource benefits are most important as identified by the WLCI and the KFO. Maintaining the native vegetative communities and protecting them from invading weed species is critical to wildlife populations throughout southwestern Wyoming. Mule deer and the greater sage grouse in sagebrush-steppe habitat and bald eagles and moose in riparian areas are the major species to benefit from this work. BLM CCI dollars will be provided to the Lincoln County and the Uinta County Weed & Pest Districts through assistance agreements to support additional seasonal work crews, equipment use and the cost of chemicals; they, in turn, match contributed dollars with in-kind services to double the number of acres covered. Their In-kind services include hiring their regular seasonal work crews, providing and maintaining spray equipment, and purchasing chemicals. The Bureau, under Executive Order #13112, is to use programs and authorities to detect and control invasive noxious weeds, monitor invasive species accurately and reliably, provide for restoration of natural habitat that has been invaded by weeds, conduct research, and promote public education on weeds. External support includes: Lincoln and Uinta County Weed and Pest Districts, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Grazing Permittees, Rich County Weed and Pest District (Utah), Highland Cooperative Weed Management Area (Group), Bear River Divide Weed Management Area (Group), Salt Lake Field Office (BLM-Utah), Various Oil and Gas Companies.Uinta County Weed and Pest District has concentrated their work on the Muddy Creek and Blacks Fork River, treating tamarix (saltcedar) and replanting with native vegetation.
