Research on coastal change in Western Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future research. This project identified existing coastal change projects in Western Alaska that were happening in 2014, scheduled for 2015 or occured in 2012-2014. The report (below) provides a synthesis of information about each project category, and an associated online database (see ACCAP project page link below) describes individual projects and information on how to contact the project leader. These products document the project landscape for communities facing change, decision-makers navigating...

This document is the final report for the project. It describes how contacts were identified, provides general descriptions of different categories (such as coastal erosion or coastal adaptation projects), and links them back to findings and recommendations from the Coastal Hazards workshop co-sponsored by the Western Alaska LCC, the Alaska Climate Science Center, and the Alaska Ocean Observing System in 2012.Research on coastal change in Western Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future research. Research on coastal change in Western Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future research. This project will identify existing coastal change projects in Western Alaska and synthesize information about each project. The resulting report will document the project landscape for communities facing change, decision-makers navigating change, researchers pursuing projects, as well as funding agencies trying to prioritize where to allocate resources.

Climate change is impacting the land and resources that Alaska Native peoples rely on for food security, resource management, and cultural continuity. In Southeast Alaska, communities face increased weather variability due to climate change, which impacts subsistence food resources in streams and coastal ocean waters. Alaska Native communities are asking for co-production models of scientific research that involve authentic partnerships and provide direct and tangible solutions to pressing climate adaptation challenges. Co-production of knowledge is broadly recognized as a valuable approach to climate research, but there is a lack of information about how to successfully implement and evaluate the co-production...
